South Australian jockey Samuel Payne is set for a lengthy stint on the sidelines after suffering a broken leg at Gawler on Wednesday.
The hoop was aboard Bay Of Portland, leading the field in a Class 1 Handicap over 1200m, when the gelding became unstable in its action as the field turned for home, dropping back sharply.
Payne was dislodged during the incident, and after receiving medical attention on course, was transported by ambulance to the Lyell McEwin Hospital.
Payne’s manager, Josh Jones, provided an update on the jockey’s condition on Friday.
“Apparently he’s broken his fibula and tibia, he’s not really in a good way, they are just waiting for the swelling to go down so they can operate,” Jones said.

• ‘Old school' jockey who manages himself will travel anywhere
It’s a major setback for Payne, who enjoyed a career-best 2023-24 season since relocating to South Australia from Victoria in early 2023.
Payne rode 43 winners across the state, striking at 12.8%, and snared a Group 3 win aboard Colmar in the Sires’ Produce Stakes.
Payne has netted 12 winners this season, including three at metro-level.
He travelled across the border in September, scoring a double at Casterton aboard Big Shaq and Moon Yanco.
