West Australian-bred and former Victorian housed gelding Rommel’s Wolf could be in line for a trip to Sydney if he proves worthy and able this campaign and the next.

The Coffs Harbour resident makes a return visit to Port Macquarie on Monday aiming to repeat his barnstorming win there at his New South Wales debut for trainer Brad Munro.

Rommel’s Wolf had only two others behind him in the 14-horse field when straightening-up for the run home but simply charged past his rivals to win in dazzling style.

“Going off his form down in Victoria when he ran first-up and the quality of horses he was running with, I always thought he would win races up here but he just hadn’t really shown me anything on the track at home to go oh well he is going to come out and win,’’ Munro said.

“But he surely turned it on the day of the race.

“That was his first actual race on the grass. His two starts were on the synthetic tracks down there and when I first got him he didn’t really handle the grass the track at home, he wasn’t doing much here on the track.

“So to see him turn up raceday and put a performance in like that, you would have think 1200m and 1400m is going to suit him down to the ground.’’

Monday’s race is over 1200m, but there will come a time when the grandson of Commands will be tried over 1400m and if successful, options will become available including a Championships tilt.

“That’s what the owner aimed at - buying a horse for the Championships. But he has got a few boxes to tick yet before we can look down that avenue but he has surely shown that he is going to be a nice progressive horse around the country anyhow,’’ says Munro.

Rommel’s Wolf has already paid for himself given he collected $13,900 winning at Port Macquarie 13-days ago having been secured online for $8,000 at the Inglis January Digital sale this year.

Munro meanwhile has suitably high hopes for his second Port Mac runner on Monday namely She’s Rewarding.

“She seems to love the Port Macquarie track,’’ the trainer said.

“She showed that her finish was pretty good last start there at Port Macquarie so she is fit enough now to run the 1500m and I think she will be thereabouts at the end of the race.’’
