Raceday focus: Preview, best bets and inside mail for Sunday’s meeting at Goulburn
Trainer Gary Colvin is looking towards the 2024 Big Dance with stable star Another One to book his place with victory in the Goulburn Cup. BEST BETS, INSIDE MAIL
Another One will forgo the opportunity to become the inaugural winner of the $250,000 Barn Dance next Tuesday at Royal Randwick to chase Sunday’s Goulburn Cup (1400m) instead.
Trainer Gary Colvin was keen to take part in the first Barn Dance ever run but made sure he had a reservation in Sunday’s Cup, just in case.
“Plan A was the Sydney race but the draw wasn’t very kind to us,” Colvin said.
“It is not as far to go for us this way and Goulburn is a nice track that will suit him.
“I might as have a crack at it (the Goulburn Cup) being a Big Dance qualifier for next year which is a race that is definitely on our radar.”

In contrast to Another One’s 14 alley in the Barn Dance, the big chestnut was gifted barrier 1 in Sunday’s $200,000 feature.
“Barrier one will be alright for him,” Colvin said.
“He can have barrier speed and he’s not a hard horse to ride. You can get out and going and hold his position, don’t get too far back.”
Another One has a compelling first-up record of two wins and two placings from six starts including his memorable win in Canberra on Black Opal Day.
“He won the National Sprint first-up and was very strong that day,” trainer Colvin said. “He was going away from them on the line.
“I think I have got his fitness right up there.”
Another One was ridden in his National Sprint victory by Danny Beasley and the pair have been virtually inseparable since.
Beasley has been putting a lot of time and effort into Colvin’s Country Championship Final winner, hanging back after the last race at Wagga on October 23 to take him for a spin around in a 1000m trial.
Another One was a somewhat predictable winner of the Heat but both trainer and jockey were pleasantly surprised by the nature of his seven length win.
“You get a horse that likes a bit of ground and you like to see them finish off a bit but he was sensational,” Colvin said.
“He put his ears back and just wanted to hammer.
“Danny said he just loved and when you get a horse loving it like that, they usually run well.”
Another One will join the millionaire’s club should he win the Goulburn Cup which is a stunning return on Colvin’s $18,000 outlay for the Bowness Stud-bred then colt at the 2019 Inglis Yearling Sale.
Another One’s dam, Herewegoagain, was a handy mare herself who won six races from 1000m up to 1412m.
Her peak performance was her third in the 2008 Wellington Boot behind Sin Sin Sin who is now remembered as the mother of The Everest winner and current Royal Randwick 1200m course record holder, Yes Yes Yes.

INSIDE MAIL - GOULBURN
RACE 1
Outcast Girl has some deep form for a horse that has only raced six times. For example, she ran fourth at Warwick Farm about two weeks prior to her fifth at Kembla to King Colorado. Outcast Girl was very strong to the line from last on the turn to clock on fourth at Newcastle first-up over 1400m. Fitter, better draw, mile. Gooree-bred American Pharaoh son Egyptologist will appreciate 1600m on debut. Queen Of Drama has been getting better with each run and step up in distance.
Bet: Outcast Girl to win
RACE 2
Fairness Is Best is a Pat Murphy-trained local who has a very tidy C.V of two wins and three seconds from nine starts. The son of Press Statement is in a real purple patch of form having won two out of his last three. Only has to run the mile and there is no suggestion that he won’t. Bellman was a dual acceptor on the day. He has a good little record at the 1600m but credit is due for his ‘good’ run in that 1800m Highway on October 21. Clearly the Matthew Dale-trained galloper will find this mission a whole lot easier.
Bet: Fairness Is Best to win, exacta 5 to beat 1
RACE 3
Knights Armour will be ridden by Michael Heagney whose record on Super Impose is two rides, one win, one second. His record on Knights Armor is two rides, two wins. Just saying. As for Knights Armour, has a winning strike-rate of 33 per cent which is admirable really. Better still, has won two from three at Goulburn. One of those wins came on October 14 when he beat his main rival, Nic’s Hero, who has finished on the podium 14 times in 36 starts and six of them were wins.
Bet: Knights Armour to win, quinella 1, 2
RACE 4
Plucky Ducky was unlucky last start. The Pat Murphy-trained filly was a bit of barber shop tip on the day but nothing went right for her, pretty much from acceptances time up until and capped off by the hip and shoulder she copped at the 200m. With all that said, she will have to improve - and bring her best - to turn the tables on two horses that ran really quite well in that same race namely Matthew Dale’s Big Opinion and the cleverly-named Sebring gelding, Laguna Seca.
Bet: Plucky Ducky each-way, box trifecta 2, 4, 6, 13
RACE 5
Shalook is a Mitchell Beer-trained mare whose record speaks to her consistency and reliability, namely 13 starts for three wins and four placings, three of those were seconds. Beer has selected a very winnable race for the daughter of Shalaa who is back to country grade after a pretty honourable fifth at Kembla. Mittata maintained, nay improved upon, his outstanding first-up record when he won here on Oct 3. Perhaps it is worth mentioning that his second-up numbers are not as good reading but he is the best horse in the race.
Bet: Shalook to win, quinella 1, 7
RACE 6
Ballistic Therapy has won three of her last four starts and with a fair bit of credit owed to her rider Deanne Panya. The form is quite strong around this mare or that should be behind this mare given she has beaten a few subsequent winners. Barrier 2 was the clincher. Her danger, one of them anyway, is Mosgold who has twin sister Beany Panya on board. Worth noting there that Beany has ridden this mare at both of her career wins. Big watch on Flic En Flac who is two from three and trialling well.
Bet: Ballistic Therapy to win, exacta 5 to beat 3
RACE 7
Another One was scratched from Tuesday’s Barn Dance to run in the Goulburn Cup and it is easy to see why given he drew barrier 14 at Randwick and gate 1 at Goulburn. There is not all that much difference in the potential winnings so it makes sense to come here and race over 1400m - a trip which Another One is four from six including the Country Championships Final and the National Sprint. There are any number of horses that could end up going the other way to Another One, that is to say scratched from Goulburn to go to Randwick so have to wait.
Bet: Another One to win
RACE 8
Montebello’s Charm might also be saved for Randwick on Tuesday. If he goes there and if it is wet, it might be wise to have something on the Danny Williams-trained son of Smart Missile. Not saying he can’t win a Good rated track but he does seem to appreciate some give in the ground. Flashy chestnut Choisir’s Choice could easily peak here third-up. He’s from a very good yard and he has raced well at Goulburn multiple times before. Any one of Hold, Pencilled and Futtaim (if they come) are in the mix.
Bet: Montebello’s Charm to win or, if scratched, Choisir’s Choice to win
