Taylor Marshall will make his first and last trip to Kranji next month as he looks to win the last Group 1 Singapore Gold Cup, with the famous track set to close down for good on the same day.

The lightweight son of Melbourne Cup winning jockey John Marshall has been booked to ride Ricardo Le Grange’s Hole In One, who is set to again be a sparring partner for Singapore champion Lim’s Kosciuszko in the $1.38m feature on October 5.

The Brisbane-based jockey is looking to put his name up in lights and says he is keen to be a part of history, with Singapore playing a huge role in racing over the past 100 years.

“It’ll be my first time there, so I’m actually looking forward to getting there and being able to soak up the day itself,” Marshall said.

“It’ll be pretty historic really and I think the horse is a great opportunity.

“It’s the ending of a chapter there and Singapore has played an important role in racing, so to sign off there with a win would be special.

“Dad did four years in Hong Kong, but never rode in Singapore, so I am really keen to get over there because I think the atmosphere will be pretty cool, being the last meeting and all.”

Retired jockey Robbie Fradd worked with Marshall to secure the ride and has played a pivotal role in helping other jockeys get recent opportunities in Singapore.

“It came about with Robbie Fradd, he is still well connected with trainers over there, especially Ricardo Le Grange, who trains Hole In One,” Marshall said.

“Ricardo called me so I went and looked at the replays and I thought he ran a really gallant fourth behind Lim’s Kosciuszko and he will drop eight kilos and step up to 2000m which seems to suit.”

Marshall, who won on $101 roughie Credit Controller two weeks ago and landed another long-priced winner with Linthorpe Lad on Saturday, said he was keen to use his ability to ride light to attract more rides in bigger races.

“I’m hoping this opportunity can lead to some lightweight rides in some bigger races, I’d love something to present itself,” Marshall said.

“A lot of the guys in the jockeys room have been talking about it, so it is good to get the chance to go up there.”
