THE Courier-Mail’s racing editor Nathan Exelby breaks down the big races at Doomben, headlined by the $750,000 Group 1 Doomben 10,000, on Saturday.

Track: Good (4)

Weather: Sunny, 24C

BEAT THE BOOKIE: VALUE BETS

STABLE WATCH: ROYAL RANDWICK

ANALYSIS: DOOMBEN 10,000

THE EARLY OIL: SANDOWN LAKESIDE

Race 5: BRC Sires Produce

1350m, 2YO G2, 2.42pm

In the run: Dreams Aplenty can cross without too many troubles. Souchez and Attention look like getting gun runs.

Take note: Not much between Souchez and Attention in the Champagne, but Attention is twice the price here, so have gone that way. Peter and Paul Snowden have an unbelievable record in 2YO features and Blake Shinn has joined in the action with them this season.

Did you know: The last two runnings of this have produced blowout results, with winners priced at $18 and $17. Candika is double figure odds but draws much better and has been desperate for the extra trip.

Early money: All of them have trimmed up with the scratching of Sylpheed ($8). Souchez nice and skinny now at $2.40, as he had already been $3.40 into $3.

Nathan’s tip: Attention $5.50

Nathan’s danger: Candika $14

Doomben Race 5

Race 6: Lord Mayor’s Cup

1615m, SWFA G3, 3.21pm

In the run: Brave Ali, Court’s Star and Peace Force the pilots. Worthy Cause will also roll forward and Hopfgarten can be handy.

Take note: Not much between Amovatio and Mighty Lucky in their past two runs. Amovatio took the shortcuts at Scone, while Mighty Lucky had to race wide and was brave under the big weight. Draws better here.

Did you know: Chris Waller has indicated Kool Kompany will be ridden quietly in a big to get him to finish off his race. He did that first up this time in before being ridden closer and over-racing every time since. Best ratings stack up for this. Dangerous here.

Early money: Will be a good betting race. Amovatio is $4.80 favourite but plenty of fans for the locals Hopfgarten ($6.50) and Worthy Cause ($7).

Nathan’s tip: Mighty Lucky $5.50

Nathan’s danger: Kool Kompany $9

Race 7: Doomben 10,000

1350m, SWFA G1, 4pm

In the run: Speed drawn out, with Music Magnate, Divine Centuri and Two Blue all crossing. Fell Swoop and Hooked can slot in behind for nice runs.

Take note: Delectation boasts clearly the peak performance in this field, having downed Chautauqua last November. He’s hit and miss, but should have finished closer in the BTC Cup and trip looks like suiting now with James McDonald going back on.

Did you know: It was a blowout result last year, but in eight previous runnings, the biggest priced winner was $6, with five favourites winning. Azkadellia has the credentials to add to that. Will be last in the run, but has a devastating turn of foot and can round them up.

Early money: Has been a late swing in the week for Delectation, who was $6 in early markets. Fell Swoop ($5) and Dothraki ($6) have been safe, while UBET have struggled to write a ticket on Music Magnate ($7.50).

Nathan’s tip: Azkadellia $3

Nathan’s danger: Delectation $4.80

Something special: Mackintosh and Blake Shinn combine for an easy win. Picture: Jono Searle

Race 8: Grand Prix Stakes

2200m, 3YO G3, 4.37pm

In the run: Mackintosh was able to control it in front and zip home last time. Wouldn’t surprise if something tried to apply pressure here, but he’s drawn well enough to take a sit if that happens.

Take note: Cylinder Beach was only second up at 2000m and did a tidy job to finish second to Mackintosh. Michael Cahill returns to take over from James Orman, who filled in last time.

Did you know: Howard Be Thy Name is racing in his fourth state in as many months. Unusual for a South Australian Derby winner to kick on to this carnival. Ratings from there seemingly stack up for this, but banking on others having more upside.

Early money: Punters produced the cash as soon as markets opened, with some offering $2.80 about Mackintosh. Howard Be Thy Name ($4.40) the only other one they are interested in.

Nathan’s tip: Mackintosh $2.30

Nathan’s danger: Cylinder Beach $7.50
