DR ELIOT Forbes starts his tenure as Racing Queensland boss on Monday after pledging to earn the respect of the industry at Saturday night’s Horse of the Year function.

Forbes will be RQ’s first official chief executive since Darren Condon was dismissed last year. He takes over from Ian Hall and Sam Adams, who have performed in an “acting” role since.

“I understand the racing industry in Queensland has faced several years of uncertainty and financial challenges.

“Having navigated the industry in Tasmania through a not dissimilar scenario, I can fully appreciate the impact that this uncertainty has on industry confidence,” Forbes said in his maiden speech to the industry on Saturday.

“I want the participants to have confidence in their state racing authority, but I am also acutely conscious that respect must be earned. I know RQ has had its ups and downs, but there is much to be optimistic about in the future.

“I give my absolute commitment that I will do my best to listen to industry views during the decision-making process.”

Forbes said driving commercial performance to ensure racing remained relevant for 21st century audiences and a review of infrastructure needs were at the top of his agenda.

“The wagering landscape is dynamic and highly competitive,” he said.

“The Queensland racing industry must continue to ensure that it adapts to the new commercial landscape and is aligned to customer trends.

“I am also very aware of the need to review and consider the infrastructure needs for racing and training facilities around the state.”
