Punters on top early at Doomben

MAURUS kicked punters off on the right foot and punters have had their eye in right through the first half of the Doomben card.

MAURUS kicked punters off on the right foot and punters have had their eye in right through the first half of the Doomben card.

The worst result for bookies was Tiyatrolani, a $6 chance on Saturday morning, but backed from $5 into $4 on track and paying even skinnier on the totes.

“Another pocket liner for punters and another awful result for the bookies,” UBET’s Nick Curry said. “She was simply too fast for them. Every other runner under the $10 line was a win for us and it’s punters four, bookies nil.”

Maurus accounted for 40 per cent of UBET’s total hold on the opening race, while Into The Red was “backed for bundles” pre-race from $6.50 to $4.20 and was responsible for 35 per cent of the hold on the race.

Even Cashing Up was a poor result for UBET, who said he was responsible for “a five-figure loss” and was far worse than the pair the market fancied more, Fiery Heights and Dee Nine Elle.

Tiyatrolani is now headed to the Champagne Classic, while Maurus is Brisbane Cup bound.

Barry Lockwood has the Queensland Guineas in mind for Cashing Up, while Kelso Wood will restrict Into The Red to races up to 1200m after his win in the Listed Bribie.
