WILY trainer Clarry Conners concedes he has struck trouble trying to get Dawnie Perfect fit for a crack at the Queensland Oaks.

Dawnie Perfect was a class act when she won the Group 3 Ethereal Stakes in Melbourne during the spring and then fourth in the Wakeful Stakes.

However things have not gone to plan since and Conners has spent the past couple of months trying to build the filly’s fitness base heading towards the Group 1 Oaks.

She has run down the track over unsuitable distances in her most recent starts and Conners said he had been disappointed with some of the rides on her.

Queen Of Wands was an eye-catcher when she flashed home at the Sunshine Coast recently, but jockey Michael Cahill must contend with a wide barrier on Saturday and try to get midfield cover.

Queen Of Wands is probably Conners’ No. 1 seed in the Bracelet but he insists Dawnie Perfect will be supreme when the distance rises to the 2400m of the Oaks on June 4.

“The jockeys that Dawnie Perfect has had lately haven’t done a lot on her when she has really needed a good hitout to get her fitness up,” Conners said.

“She is going super and you will see her at her best when she gets out over 2000m. I think she will run a nice race in the Bracelet and I want to see her making up ground at the end.”

Conners said Queen Of Wands gave every indication she would get the 1800m of the Bracelet but he was not sure whether she would make an Oaks prospect.
