Race 1 – 2YO Handicap (800m)
BEFORE ANYONE ELSE (13) knocked up on debut but trialled better than that and is bred for speed. With Angela Jones from the ace she will take running down.
KING OF GERALDINE (1) was dominant at Dalby and has the speed to overcome the gate.
OUR GIRL SCARLETT (11) has looked sharp at her trials and will get every chance with Cejay Graham.
KAHLUA GIRL (7) beat all but Get Ready Lass on but and will have benefited from the experience. A good gate helps and Dylan Turner will have her well-placed throughout.
Verdict – BEFORE ANYONE ELSE (13) too speedy.
â â â â â
Race 2 – 3YO Maiden Handicap (1200m)
David Vandyke and Ryan Maloney are an established combination, and the resuming ACAPULCO GIRL (5) looked good at her recent trial. A runner-up on debut, from gate three she gets all the favours and can go one better.
A sister to two black-type winners and out of a Group 2 winner IKUMA (9) has a bit to live up to and hasn’t done a lot to date. Now with Tony Gollan, she has had two trials to get ready and Angela Jones will find out if anything is there.
LOPE BY NIGHT (4) hasn’t been beaten far at all three outings, gets a 3kg claim for Corey Sutherland and will get all the favours from the inside gate.
DASHING BASICS (2) has shown a bit at his trials, gets a tongue-tie and won’t have to be a star to trouble these.
Verdict – ACAPULCO GIRL (5) the one to beat.
â â â â â
Race 3 – Benchmark 58 Handicap (1200m)
The one with least convictions is MACONDA (9) which chased the talented Concessions home at the Gold Coast last start. He rises 4.5kg but takes on easier class and Kyle Wison-Taylor will have him well-placed throughout.
GOLD DUST (6) is a new acquisition to the Tony Gollan stable and brings NSW form. His recent trial was strong and from gate two will get all the favours with Angela Jones.
YES TO EXCESS (2) hasn’t flattered in three outings since resuming but drops to the right class and has a good record here at this trip. With Cobi Vitler’s 3kg claim and the best gate he can show his worth.
LOVE TO ALL (12) rounded them up at Toowoomba and wasn’t disgraced at his previous start here. Cejay Graham gets back on, and she will be testing them late.
Verdict – MACONDA (9) has some upside.
â â â â â
Race 4 – Benchmark 58 Handicap (1200m)
MATERIALIST (7) took a while to win her Maiden but won a recent trial and may have more upside than the rest. She is awkwardly drawn but has speed and Cejay Graham will take no prisoners.
INDAZA (6) is another well-bred one that has been sent north to Tony Gollan to try and get a win. Her form has been moderate, but this is the weakest race she has contested, and Ryan Maloney can find a way.
WINDOW TAPPER (8) is on the quick back-up after failing from a wide gate at Toowoomba. She won her previous two outings here; Emily Lang stays on and from the ace can make amends.
BOOGA RAY (11) was too good for them at Dalby when resuming and having his first start for Mark Currie. This is harder but the extra distance suits and with Jaden Lloyd will be prominent.
Verdict – MATERIALIST (7) finds the right race.
â â â â â
Race 5 – Benchmark 70 Handicap (800m)
Gates are all-important in these flutters and while RING OF STEEL (5) is unpredictable he has a good record here and has been readied by two trials. Cejay Graham knows his quirks and has enough gate speed to take advantage of the ace.
ENUFF PILLS (9) is an 800m specialist and has won her past three here. A good gate helps, and the handicapper may not have caught up yet.
CAMPAI (7) knows how to mix her form but improves second-up and has won over this trip previously. With Boris Thornton she won’t be far away in running.
The stablemate MAGURO (12) is another that goes well at this trip winning three times previously and Georgina Cartwright can overcome a wide gate.
Verdict – Trusting RING OF STEEL (1) to behave.
â â â â â
Race 6 – Open Handicap (1680m)
A return to provincial grade helps THIS’LLBETHEONE (1) which has been racing consistently and just missed to Victory Win in Saturday grade last start. He gives them all weight but has won here previously, makes is own luck and Taylor Marshall won on him three starts back.
RUSSIAN RONI (7) struggled in Saturday grade last start but was beaten less than three lengths. He will find this more to his liking and with Courtney Bellamy’s 3kg claim gets the gun run throughout.
It has been a while between drinks for HYDE (5) but he has been racing in far stronger company than this. He won his only previous start here over this trip and Dan McGillivray can overcome the wide gate.
The stablemate TYNDRUM GOLD (8) disappointed last start but won here two starts back and will get a positive ride from Cejay Graham.
Verdict – THIS’LLBETHEONE (1) to control the race.
â â â â â
Race 7 – Class 2 Plate (1680m)
Firmer ground helps HOLLYWOOD EPIC (4) which struggled on the heavy track last start but won his previous start here and Cobi Vitler gets back on. He steps up in trip, but his dam won over 2000m and with a good run will be hard to hold out.
Fitter for two outings, EASTOWN (3) hasn’t missed a place in four starts here and winning once over this trip. Plate conditions aren’t ideal but Noel Callow replaces Bailey Wheeler and from gate one will get all the favours.
AZUKI (1) brings the Dalby form, gets a 3kg claim for Corey Sutherland and draws to do no work. He steps up in journey but won’t be far away in running.
AIRSWING (7) has less convictions than most and will find this easier than taking on high-quality three-year-olds. The gate tests bur Andrew Mallyon knows what to do.
Verdict – HOLLYWOOD EPIC (4) to relish the trip.
â â â â â
Race 8 – Class 2 Handicap (1100m)
Trained by Tony Gollan, the speedy ROSE NOIR (8) was way too good for them at Toowoomba and has placed at three of four outings here. This is as far as she wants but Angela Jones will have her on the bunny all the way.
Pat Webster has had success with ex-Godolphin horses and while RESTONICA (1) disappointed at Toowoomba on a very heavy track when resuming he is better suited here and his Southern form is up to this.
PUNGO (2) didn’t give a yelp at the Gold Coast last start but he has been freshened, gets some gear changes and won a trial since. Noel Callow replaces the apprentice Jace McMurray and will have him near the speed throughout.
The other Gollan runner PINK THUNDER (7) goes best fresh and from gate one Emily Lang will take no prisoners.
Verdict – ROSE NOIR (8) to run them off their legs.
