Horse named after iconic Breakfast Creek Hotel to contest QTIS Jewel 2YO at Gold Coast
A horse named after Brisbane’s iconic Breakfast Creek Hotel will contest the $500,000 QTIS Jewel 2YO on Saturday, and that’s where trainer Will Hulbert will be celebrating should the colt win.
Eagle Farm trainer Will Hulbert warmed up for Thee Creek’s assignment in Saturday’s $500,000 QTIS Jewel 2YO by having a few beers at Brisbane’s iconic Breakfast Creek Hotel.
He will be back there celebrating with Thee Creek’s owners on Sunday if the colt named after the famous pub wins the rich race on the Gold Coast.
But he quipped he won’t be doing a John Singleton.

“I won’t be shouting the bar, because the Government keeps putting the price of beer up,” Hulbert, speaking from the Breakfast Creek Hotel while having a beer, said.
“A few of the owners who are in the horse actually drink here, so that’s handy.
“If this horse wins the Jewel we will be back here at The Creek on Sunday morning, pulling the locks off the doors.”

It was a natural fit to name Thee Creek after a well-known Brisbane pub, given that Hulbert and his dad Peter train the colt’s brother The Hamo.
The Hamo, named after the Hamilton Hotel which is a famed racing pub a stone’s throw from Eagle Farm, is off the scene after having bone-chip surgery and is expected to be back at the races around Christmas time.
Younger brother Thee Creek has only had one start when second behind Rob Heathcote’s impressive youngster and key Jewel contender Pretty Dubious.

But Hulbert said Thee Creek had massive improvement and was in The Jewel up to his ears as a $26 chance.
“This horse is just a natural, everything he has done from day one he has done with ridiculous ease,” Hulbert said.
“All the data from his track work is just unreal.
“The owners have that much faith in the horse and we think, potentially, he could be a star.
“We rode him fairly conservatively at his first start because he had only had one 840m trial going into that.
“Every horse we normally give at least a jumpout and a trial before we go to the races, but we ran out of time with him.
“Then on race day he tried to begin too quickly and one of his hind legs slipped coming out of the gates.
“We didn’t want to be going head and head with Pretty Dubious when we only had one trial under the belt.
“Our horse raced like a horse that had only had one trial.”

Barrier 14 doesn’t appear ideal for Thee Creek but in the past there have been occasions were it hasn’t been a disadvantage to be covering ground at the Gold Coast.
Jockey Mark du Plessis will have the task of executing the game plan.
Hulbert says du Plessis is one of the best jockeys in Brisbane and should get more support from local trainers.
“We will just watch how the first few Gold Coast races play out on Saturday before thinking about how we want this horse ridden,” Hulbert said.
When he spoke to Racenet, Hulbert was at The Breakfast Creek Hotel for meetings (over beers) to help raise money for QRISP (Queensland Racing Industry Support Program).
QRISP offers emotional and financial support to those working in the thoroughbred racing industry that find themselves needing help.
