The annual medal is named after the late, legendary Queensland racecaller and honours trainers from across the Sunshine State who have recorded a special career milestone or improved their personal best result.

Run by the Australian Trainers’ Association and sponsored by Magic Millions, the medal was won by Johnson in a tight and thrilling finish with the winner decided in the last round of voting.

Barcaldine-based Johnson was nominated for the medal in February when Fab’s Cowboy scored his 51st win, joining Walk Cool for the most wins by a modern day racehorse.

At his next start, the dirt track champion broke the record when scoring his 52nd win in Mount Isa.

Fab’s Cowboy was forced into retirement when he turned 13 following his last start in Longreach in late July.

The Toowoomba father and daughter training team of Tony and Maddysen Sears finished runner-up in the Wayne Wilson Medal for their efforts to win a series of Listed races in June, including the Ipswich Cup.
