MICHAEL Cahill fears rain could bring about the undoing of Trubia when he reunites with the hulking sprinter in Saturday’s Eye Liner Stakes.

The Michael Lakey-trained stallion has been heavily backed to win on Saturday and Cahill regards it as the right race for him, but he does not want the forecast rain to arrive early.

“I know the form guide says he’s won twice on soft ground, but I rode him in a trial one day in the wet and he didn’t seem to handle it too well,” Cahill said.

“Hopefully that rain can stay away, because he looks beautifully placed and the inside gate is a big thing on our side.”

Cahill has won three of his four rides on Trubia but relinquished the mount to Jim Byrne and Bobby El-Issa in his latest two runs, having a commitment to Artlee.

“It was only the barrier that beat him the day I lost on him, so it could easily be four from four,” Cahill said.

“His run in a stronger race behind Snippets Land shows he’s up to this and given the way he got around Toowoomba, I don’t see the tight track at Ipswich being a problem for him. The barrier is also a big help in my eyes. I’d rather be in there than out wide.”

Cahill has had a solid carnival, winning the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes on Leebaz, in addition to the Tails Stakes (Bewhatyouwannabe), Gunsynd Classic (Cylinder Beach) and Bright Shadow (Palazzo Pubblico).

“Those southern stables are hard to compete with,’’ he said “They just have so much depth, but I can’t complain about the carnival. I was able to get on a couple of them and win some nice races.’’
