BLAKE Shinn hopes this giant leap by Reneged at the Sunshine Coast yesterday is indicative that his Queensland carnival fortunes will take off at Doomben today.

Shinn was coasting to the line an easy winner on the $2.30 pop when Reneged, a three-quarter-brother to Buffering, jumped at the shadow of the winning post a few strides before the line.

All ended well for horse, rider and favourite backers, but Shinn says he has no intention of changing careers.

“The horse has a better future as a hurdler than I do as a jumps jockey,” he said.

“I’ve had a few jump at shadows. It’s not the best feeling when it happens, especially at that point in the race. That’s when your natural instincts kick in. You just have to hang on tight, remain balanced and hope they don’t duck sideways.”

Shinn was invited to Caloundra by David Vandyke to ride Blackjack Bella and in picking up the ride on Reneged he was able to land a winning double.

Today he has leading hopes on Dothraki in the Doomben 10,000, Attention in the Sires and Mackintosh in the Grand Prix.

“Dothraki will get a nice run and hopefully I can get that extra neck out of him this time. He should get a great run, third or fourth stalking the speed,” Shinn said.

“Attention stepping up to 1350m is well placed. I should be able to control the race on speed. Mackintosh going to 2200m is not a concern. Drawn a great gate, he can dominate the race again, win and go onto the Derby.”
