CHAMPION mare Winx equalled Phar Lap’s longest winning streak when she cruised to her 14th straight win at Randwick on Monday.
Chris Waller’s mighty mare kicked off her autumn campaign in perfect style, easily accounting for her rivals in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes. Winx’s return was delayed 48 hours after Saturday’s Randwick meeting was postponed due to Sydney’s extreme heat at the weekend.
Winx was a long odds-on favourite in the Apollo and she didn’t disappoint.
Winx matched Phar Lap’s mark of 14 straight wins, which “Big Red” set in the 1930-31 season. Champions Bernborough and Carbine are next on the list with 15 wins. Black Caviar holds the record with 25 wins in her unbeaten career.
Winx is likely to have her next start in the Group 1 $600,000 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on February 25. Her main autumn goal is the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on April 8.
