Punter’s brutal take-down of ‘cry baby’ Sydney trainer

SYDNEY horse trainer Bryce Heys was quite emotional after falling short of his first major win. One punter had no sympathy.

HORSERACING can be an emotionally turbulent sport full of highs and lows.

There’s the elation and jubilation of seeing your horse cross the line first after months of rigorous training.

And then there’s the lows that can cover anything from injuries to poor runs.

Or in Bryce Heys’ case, there’s the devastation of seeing your horse narrowly miss out on the win in a tight Group 1 race.

The Warwick Farm trainer’s Spieth was edged out by Malaguerra in the Darley Classic on November 5, denying Heys his first Group 1 win.

A visibly emotional Heys had this to say post-race:

“There’s no doubting that [it’s the one that got away],” he said.

“I just don’t get these opportunities; it’s only my second season training.

“I’m so proud of him. He’s a real high-quality colt. He’ll have his day in the sun.”

You would think that’s the end of it. Heys moves on from the disappointment and Spieth, one day, goes on to greater things.

Except that a couple of weeks later Heys received this delightfully helpful letter from a punter...

“Bryce, so I was listening to your interview the other day,” the letter begins.

“Oh you poor thing. I’ve included some tissues for you, crybaby

“You’ve been training for 18 mths and ‘NO GROUP 1’.

“Bloody hell, most trainers go through their entire life without a Group 1 let alone 18 mths in your case. GET OVER IT. Boo hoo.

“I backed Malaguerra - HA HA.”

To his credit, Heys took the letter quite well. And yes, tissues were - indeed - included.
