Oscietra off to paddock after debut defeat

DAVID Hayes will send Black Caviar’s daughter Oscietra to the paddock for a month and be allowed to develop and grow following her Flemington defeat.

IF David Hayes can take a positive out of the debut defeat of Black Caviar’s daughter Oscietra at Flemington it is that he won’t have to push her to run in the rich two-year-old races during the autumn.

Instead the filly, who was beaten into third place in the New Year Plate on Sunday, will head to the paddock for a month and be allowed to develop and grow.

“There’s one good thing about her not winning and that is you’re not tempted by Diamonds and Slippers,” Hayes said.

“She’s bred to be a great three and four-year-old and so we’ll take that view now.”

Black Caviar did not race as an early two-year-old, making her debut at Flemington in April 2009, the start of a 25-run unbeaten winning streak.

Lindsay Park’s senior trainer said allowing Oscietra a month in the paddock now would be beneficial to her long-term racing career.

And Hayes is of the opinion that with time the filly will win her share of races.

“Mum never raced at this age for a reason,” Hayes said.

“So we’ll give Oscietra a month off and she won’t be seen for three or four months, but I think she’ll be bloody good.”

Like jockey Luke Nolen, who rode Black Caviar to 22 of her 25 wins, Hayes hopes the comparisons with the great mare are finished.

“She’s not mummy, but who is,” he said. “We’ve all raced for 30 years and I haven’t seen one like Black Caviar, so you wouldn’t think there’ll be another like her.”

Fillies excite Lindsay Park

LINDSAY Park senior trainer David Hayes may have been disappointed with Oscietra’s third at her Flemington debut but he’s happy in the knowledge the stable has two ready-made replacements.

Tulips and Catchy, both debut Moonee Valley winners last month, are on a path to next month’s Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield while Black Caviar’s daughter will have a break.

Hayes has high hopes for the fillies and at this stage of their careers is refusing to split them.

Catchy, a winner on December 9, will run in the Super VOBIS Two-Year-Old Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on Saturday in an attempt to secure extra prize money and ensure a start in the Blue Diamond.

She will then be kept fresh before contesting the Blue Diamond Prelude for fillies at Caulfield on February 11.

“She’s running on Saturday to ensure she’s got enough stake money to get into the good races,” Hayes said.

“We’ll keep her races spaced but she’ll more than likely go to the Diamond Prelude after Saturday.”

Tulip was impressive winning at Moonee Valley on Saturday, rounding the field up from last position in the style of a good horse.

Hayes says he’ll wrap Tulip in cotton wool until her next appearance, likely to be in the Group Three Chairman’s Stakes at Caulfield on February 4.

He said he would keep the fillies apart until the Blue Diamond on February 25.

Parnham to step in for Oliver

BRAD Parnham will replace the suspended Damien Oliver for Western Australia in the final State of Origin jockeys’ series heats on Saturday.

Oliver was to be the star of the Gold Coast meeting on Saturday, which will have two heats of the State of Origin series.

But he was suspended at Moonee Valley on Saturday and under Victorian rules he can’t ride on a stay.

Western Australia is equal third on 17 points and 16 points behind leader NSW on 33.

But with 32 points on offer at the Gold Coast it is a case of all states still being in with a chance.

Perth-based Parnham made the most of his one ride in the State of Origin series at Doomben two weeks ago to ride a winner.
