‘The horse is just flying’: Bjorn Baker-trained gelding Disneck again thumps rivals at Royal Randwick

For Sydney’s summer sprint find Disneck it was a case of “rinse and repeat” when racing over Royal Randwick’s 1200m course on Saturday.

Trainer Bjorn Baker has tested Disneck at the course and distance three times in four weeks and the result has been the same every time – an emphatic win.

If anything, Disneck seems to be getting better with racing as he showed with another brilliant effort in the Precise Air Handicap.

Sydney punters might have been wary to jump on the Disneck bandwagon initially with the sprinter winning at $12 on December 14 and then at $5 last week, but they were all over him on Saturday, sending him out at $2.05.

It proved an easy watch as jockey Josh Parr rode Disneck to pattern, settling at the rear of the field, getting out to the centre of the track at the top of the straight – and letting the four-year-old do the rest.

Disneck again demonstrated his exciting finishing speed to zoom past his rivals and score by a widening margin of nearly two lengths from Pioneer River ($8) with Gravina ($12) a half-length away third, just in front of In Flight.

“The horse is just flying this summer,’’ said Baker who was watching from the Gold Coast where he is attending the Magic Millions carnival and yearling sale.

“His confidence is up, he obviously loves Randwick, and we know the best way to ride him now.

“We have to let him find his feet early, don’t push him, and then use his acceleration in the straight.

“I would love a Randwick 1200m race for him every week!”

Perfumist delivers sweet smell of success for Baker

Baker said with Disneck in such a rich vein of form, he would look to keep the gelding’s preparation going through summer.

“The horse is really enjoying his racing and is thriving at the moment so there’s no reason to send him out for a spell,’’ Baker said.

“We will look at what’s coming up but I’m thinking a race like the Southern Cross Stakes (Group 3, 1200m, Rosehill, February 1) for the horse,’’ Baker said.

“It’s a step up in grade again but he is going so well and deserves his chance at a higher level.’’

Disneck gave Baker a Randwick brace after his earlier win with Perfumist, and also provided Parr with a winning double after he had scored on Accredited.

Remarkably, Disneck wasn’t the only horse completing a hat-trick of wins at Randwick on Saturday.

Baker’s Perfumist also completed a treble and the Joe Pride-trained Accredited also made it three wins on the bounce.
