Stamina tests hold no fears for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s flashy fillies Bellazaine and Clean Energy
Trainer Adrian Bott is optimistic talented fillies Bellazaine and Clean Energy can pass their stamina tests and secure feature race wins on the final day of the Sydney autumn carnival at Royal Randwick on Saturday.
Trainer Adrian Bott is optimistic talented fillies Bellazaine and Clean Energy can pass their stamina tests and secure feature race wins on the final day of the Sydney autumn carnival at Royal Randwick on Saturday.
Bellazaine is being asked to stretch her brilliance to 1600m for the Group $1 million Champagne Stakes and Clean Energy races beyond 1200m for the first time in the Group 3 $250,000 James HB Carr Stakes (1400m).
Bott, who trains in partnership with Hall of Famer Gai Waterhouse, believes the time is right to give both fillies their opportunity over a race distance that is perceived to be outside their comfort zone.
Bellazaine, who defeated the “boys” in the Lonhro Plate earlier this campaign, goes into the final leg of the Sydney juvenile triple crown after finishing eighth in Marhoona’s Golden Slipper then sixth to Vinrock in the ATC Sires Produce Stakes.

Bott felt there was merit in Bellazaine’s Sires effort and it has given the stable confidence in the filly’s ability to cope with the testing Randwick mile course on Saturday.
“I thought she stuck on well in the Sires,’’ Bott said.
“She wasn’t beaten far and will be better for that run over the 1400m. She seems to have done well off that run, too.’’

Bellazaine is at $7.50 in latest TAB Fixed Odds betting behind $4 favourite Nepotism in what seems an open Champagne Stakes.
Clean Energy, who cost $2.6 million as a yearling, is the $2.50 favourite for the Carr Stakes.
The promising three-year-old filly won three of her four starts before a luckless effort in the PJ Bell Stakes two weeks ago when she was three-wide without cover for most of the race before finishing fourth, beaten less than a half-length behind She’s Got Pizzazz.
“At this stage of her preparation I think she is looking for 1400m,’’ Bott said. “This is a nice set-up for her.’’

The Waterhouse-Bott stable has a strong representation in another two stakes races on Saturday with $4.60 favourite New Endeavour in the Group 3 $250,000 JRA Plate (2000m) and Shangri La Spring ($10) in the Group 3 $250,000 Frank Packer Plate (2000m).
New Endeavour has been improved by two runs from a spell and indicated he was close to top form when he ran on strongly for second behind Just Folk in the Doncaster Prelude.

“I thought New Endeavour was excellent last start. He is coming on well and should appreciate 2000m,’’ Bott said.
“This is new ground for Shangri La Spring but it will open up some options for him if he can stay the 2000m. We will learn more on Saturday.’’
The Waterhouse-Bott stable also has I’mintowin ($4.40 favourite) and Townsend ($12) resuming in the Randwick closer, the Pace Setters Handicap (1400m).
“I’mintowin always goes well fresh and we have been happy with his two trials,’’ Bott said. “This might be a bit short for Townsend but he is coming up well.’’
