Hall of Famer Ron Quinton is hoping to bookend the Rosehill Gardens meeting with Like Anything and Watch My Girl on Saturday.

Like Anything is contesting the Rosehill opener, the Chandon Handicap (1100m) then Watch My Girl is in the last of 10 races, the Toyota Forklifts Handicap (1300m).

The Quinton runners are also at the opposite ends of their race careers – Like Anything is a promising two-year-old having just her third race start while Watch My Girl is a rising five-year-old mare who is likely to be retired to stud this spring breeding season.

Like Anything, a daughter of Arrowfield Stud’s leading stallion Maurice who is also the sire of Watch My Girl, impressed Quinton last start when she ran on late for second behind Godolphin’s Crocodile.

The pair clash again at Rosehill but Crocodile is the $4.40 TAB Fixed Odds favourite while Like Anything is rated a $15 chance.

“I feel Like Anything is a filly that will be better next preparation, she’s probably more a three-year-old type,’’ Quinton said.

“She’s still learning her trade but she gives me the impression she might get over a middle distance.

“But she’s done well in both her starts and I think we will give her a break after Saturday and try to bring her back in spring.’’

Quinton only has a small team in work these days but his stable is in form with four winners from their last seven starters including the promising Signor Tortoni who bolted home by four lengths at Gosford on Thursday.

Watch My Girl can add her name to the stable’s growing list of recent winners when she has her second run back from a spell at Rosehill.

Quinton revealed there were genuine excuses for Watch My Girl’s first-up flop when she ran only 11th to Dark Jewel in the Group 3 Dark Jewel Classic at Scone a month ago.

“Watch My Girl was a bit disappointing at Scone but she pulled up with thumps,’’ Quinton said. “She’s fine now, she’s bounced back really well.

“She’s probably off to stud later this year so it would be nice to win another race or two with her. She’s been a good mare but probably a length or two off stakes level.’’

The trainer has booked 3kg claiming apprentice Jace McMurray to ride Watch My Girl and reduce the mare’s impost to 60kg.

Quinton revealed he was alerted to McMurray’s emerging talents some months ago.

“My old apprentice partner, Gordon Spinks, rang me and said this kid, Jace McMurray, is a good rider and needs to be coming to Sydney,’’ Quinton said.

“I haven’t got enough horses in work these days to give an apprentice enough opportunities but he’s going to do well at Michael Freedman’s.

“Jace is a talented young kid, he works hard and he’s willing to listen – he’s definitely got a future.’’

SECTIONAL STARS

REGULATED AFFAIR (race 1) wasn’t suited by the extremely heavy track conditions and the sit-sprint nature of the race when fourth to Agarwood at Randwick last start. But Regulated Affair did finish his race off strongly with a closing final 200m sectional of 12.80s that was bettered only be stablemate Providence (12.77s) who ran third. Providence contests the Group 1 JJ Atkins at Eagle Farm today while Regulated Affair looks placed to advantage at Rosehill.

TOURISTIC (race 8) burst back to winning form in the Lord Mayor’s Cup last start when he accelerated clear to win by a widening margin of more than two lengths. He ran his final 600m in 35.55s and a closing 200m sectional of 11.98s to win easily. No other horse in the race broke 12s for their final 200m split.

TRIAL POINTERS

SILENTSAR (race 3) tuned up for his return to racing with a close second to the handy sprinter World Alliance, beaten a half length, at Rosehill two weeks ago. World Alliance then won a very strong Canterbury midweek sprint earlier this week. Silentsar has a good first-up record and looks primed for his comeback to racing.

CHANGINGOFTHEGUARD (race 8), a Group 2 winner in England, showed staying potential in his debut Australian preparation last spring culminating with a second placing in the Colin Stephen Quality. He resumes in the Winter Cup and although he’s going straight to 2400m, he’s a natural stayer who impressed winning a Newcastle barrier trial over an unsuitable 1200m. He’s a big watch.

BEST BET

CODETTA (race 5) resumed at Rosehill two weeks ago and had the “flashing light” on her with a fast-finishing second behind King’s Secret. Codetta didn’t have a lot of galloping room in the straight but still sprinted her final 600m in 34.07s with a closing 200m split of 11.45s to finish second. Both sectionals were the best of the day. The Chris Waller-trained Codetta is protecting a perfect second-up record – two wins from two attempts – and she meets King’s Secret better at the weights.

VALUE

HELLBENT ON YOU (race 10) had won twice in four attempts this campaign including a fast-finishing effort to score at Kensington before she struggled in very heavy conditions when fourth to Miss Kim Kar at Randwick last start. Although she never stopped trying, the mare was clearly not at her best in the going that day and will appreciate getting back onto a firmer track (soft 5) at Rosehill. She’s good each way value at $13.
