Jockey Tim Clark was left in no doubt that Mafia was set to claim victory before the horse threw the race away in the straight at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained galloper was well clear in the James Squire Benchmark 68 Handicap (1000m) when approaching the 200m he lost his action and all momentum.

“He just got close to the rail and gave himself one hell of a fright,” Clark said.

“He lost his action completely.

“He was still full of running and only had to maintain what he was doing and they weren’t going to beat him. He nearly fell over and it took them 100 metres to get past him.

“He definitely felt like he was going to win the race.”

With Mafia putting him out of contention, the Richard Litt-trained Northumbria was there to take advantage and chalk up his second win.

Northumbria ($11) defeated Joe Pride’s Storm The Ramparts ($2.60 fav) by a short-neck with the Gary Portelli-trained Debello ($14) a similar margin back to third.

Mafia ($8) finished fourth, 2¾ lengths away.
