DANNY RUSSELL (Herald Sun)
Caulfield
THE BANKER: Poor old Lucky Hussler probably had a migraine after bumping into so many horse rumps last start. Another stiff run like that and he’ll be renamed Unlucky Hussler. But counting on Bossy to steer a clear passage here in the Toorak Handicap. Drawn well, third-up, loves the 1600m and Darren Weir knows how to win the race, claiming victory with Trust In A Gust last year.
IN THE FRAME: Fawkner is the bombproof each-way special. Has drawn to get the ideal sit, will turn for home ahead of Kermadec and will relish the 2000m. If there is any doubt about Kermadec running out the distance at his first try, Fawkner will have his measure.
THE RISK: Hard to fall into the two Thousand Guineas favourites with any confidence. Both Pasadena Girl and Stay With Me looked flat after being caught behind a muddling pace last start. Looking towards Jameka each-way at the $9.
STABLE (on fire): Chris Waller could leap from 51 Group 1 winners to 54 by day’s end. Closing on the century faster than Davey Warner in a T20 bash. Kermadec is $3 favourite for the Caulfield Stakes, Press Statement $2.25 favourite in the Caulfield Guineas and Vanbrugh a $1.80 favourite for the Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick. Might be a special day for the emotional Waller.
JOCKEY (on fire): Kerrin McEvoy can’t complain this week, picking up the potential Cox Plate ride on Pornichet, something of a forgotten horse in the Caulfield Stakes. Believes it can turn tables on Kermadec. He also rates Bon Aurum in the Guineas and Bohemian Lily in the Herbert Power. When asked to nominate the biggest danger to Super Cash in the Thousand Guineas, McEvoy said Badawiya.

SHAYNE O’CASS (The Sportsman)
Randwick
THE BANKER: Harlem River (Caulfield, Race 3, No. 1). Melbourne is not my turf and this is supposed to be all about Randwick on Saturday but allow me to indulge this one time. Harlem River, a Randwick filly, resumes at Caulfield on Saturday. I am telling it straight, horses that trial like she has been DON’T lose on race day. My banker in Sydney is $15, the pony-sized Zarzali in the Angst; dying for a mile she is!
THE RISK: Music Magnate (Randwick, Race 4, No. 10). Hasn’t done much wrong — ever — but $2.60 in a race that is borderline Listed? Granted he is an up-and-comer, but some of these have triple figure benchmarks and are black-type winners. If he was $4.60 — yes, but not $2.60.
IN THE FRAME: Now’s The Time (Randwick, Race 8, No. 12). Had trialled quite well before resuming in a midweeker at Rosehill where there was some money for him. He got back and was a bit of a handful in the straight but he finished off like a horse who had ‘next time’ written all over him. Is $17 with the TAB Fixed Odds.
STABLE (on fire): Waller — naturally. O’Shea — ditto. But Saturday honours could go to Paul Perry. I think he’ll win the 2YO race with Conchita and you know Tatoosh will run well again in the Spring Champion Stakes. Wouldnt It Be Nice, too, isn’t out of his race.
JOCKEY (on fire): Sam Clipperton. J-Mac’s understudy has a grand book of rides not least Peeping for his old boss and mentor Ron Quinton on the Angst.
BEN SCADDEN (The Advertiser)
Morphettville
THE BANKER: Mr Liberty (Morphettville, Race 4, No. 2). Promising type from the stable of Nick Smart, one of SA’s emerging stars of the training ranks. Showed his class with impressive win before break and has tuned up for this with nice trial effort behind Lord Aspen a couple of weeks ago.
IN THE FRAME: Zipnotized (Morphettville, Race 5, No. 9). The Wayne Francis-Glen Kent team is racing well and this mare ran a terrific race when second to Jim’s Journey last start. She’s ideally suited back against own sex here and is great each-way value.
THE RISK: I Am Gypsy (Morphettville, Race 6, No. 3). Absolutely smashed them last start when put it all together. But she can be a risk from the start and can’t afford to make a mistake in this grade. No denying her ability — but doubts remain over her manners.
JOCKEY (on fire): Barely a Saturday meeting goes by without Jason Holder finding himself in the winners’ circle. He’s leading the Adelaide jockeys premiership and has four rides again at Morphettville on Saturday. His best chance looks to be Mullinger Lane in the opening race.
TRAINER (on fire): The Philip Stokes stable is in peak form and looks well placed to extend their lead on the Adelaide trainers title. He has six runners at Morphettville on Saturday, including leading fancies Sagapuss, Colonel Custer and Defiant Angel.
NATHAN EXELBY (The Courier-Mail)
Doomben
THE BANKER: Best Of The Rest (Doomben, Race 5, No. 1). Was given a torrid run up front last time and was entitled to drop out further than he did. The first up run prior was a ripper and now he steps to his ideal distance range. Should be able to roll forward into a lovely spot without too many dramas and be very hard to beat.
IN THE FRAME: Criquette (Doomben, Race 1, No. 8). She’s the most talked about 2yo in Queensland for some time, following a recent jumpout blitz. As much as $3.50 was bet on Wednesday, but the cat was soon out of the bag and you are looking at around the $1.50 mark now.
THE RISK: Politeness (Caulfield, Race 10, No. 4). Excellent win first up and no doubt she has the ability to win again, but not sure this sets up as well, plus she has a couple of classy new rivals to contend with. Hasn’t strung two wins together since the Maiden/R64 two years ago.
STABLE (on fire): Tony Sears is striking at 14 per cent in town this season and landed I Am Boss a good priced winner last week. Expectations will be high that his unbeaten filly Blue Desert Moon can go four from four in the last.
JOCKEY (on fire): James Orman is high balling at the top of the Brisbane Metro premiership table and has the firepower to extend his lead tomorrow. Key rides include favourites Lock’s Legend, Crooked Blaze and Blue Desert Moon, while Col ‘N’ Lil and Chariot Of Gold are also likely to have plenty of admirers.
