‘Even better over 1400m’: Form guru’s ominous warning for Briasa rivals in 2025 All Aged Stakes at Royal Randwick
A leading form expert thinks Briasa can improve on a “massive new peak” when he steps out over 1400m in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes at Royal Randwick on Saturday.
Briasa will enhance his growing reputation as the “next big thing” in the Australian sprinting ranks in the Group 1 $1.5m All Aged Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday.
The Team Hawkes-trained Briasa won’t lack for opposition – there are 12 individual Group 1 winners in the 14-horse All Aged field – but the grey sprinter is the $3.50 favourite in early TAB Fixed Odds betting.
Form guru Gary Crispe said Briasa made a real statement winning the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes two weeks ago.
“Briasa really surprised me the way he won the TJ Smith,’’ Crispe said.
“It was only his second run back from a spell and I feel the way he will appreciate 1400m even more than 1200m.
“He will race handy again from barrier four and be in the right position to make his challenge.’’

Crispe said the lightly-raced Briasa returned a Timeform rating of 122 last start which was a “massive new peak” for the four-year-old gelding.
“Briasa is a relatively young horse who has only had nine starts – and he’s won seven – so I feel he can improve on that rating again,’’ Crispe said.
“He is only third-up, he can only keep getting better and the horse has been so well handled by Team Hawkes. He is clear first pick.’’

Briasa has not raced over 1400m before but his win in The Hunter over 1300m last spring was exceptional as he endured a wide run without cover.
If Briasa can complete the TJ Smith-All Stakes Group 1 sprint double, he will become only the fourth to achieve the feat after Trapeze Artist (2018), Bentley Biscuit (2007) and Shamekha (2005).

Crispe felt Godolphin’s gifted three-year-old Broadsiding was the main danger despite the colt’s unconventional preparation for the All Aged Stakes.
Broadsiding was a last start winner of the Rosehill Guineas at 2000m a month ago, holding off subsequent ATC Australian Derby winner Aeliana, but has been freshened since and is dropping back to 1400m for the weight-for-age sprint.
“I concede it’s a tough ask for Broadsiding going from 2000m back to 1400m but James Cummings is a very experienced trainer and he knows what he is doing,’’ Crispe said.
“James has given Broadsiding a month between races and with the right circumstances, he can race in a forward position as well from his barrier (three).
“He’s an outstanding three-year-old and showed a lot of courage to win the Rosehill Guineas last start.’’

• Girl power: Why mares are dominating Australian racing
Joliestar, a dual Group 1 winner, ran only ninth in Briasa’s TJ Smith Stakes but the mare was caught on the inside section of the track which was a disadvantage that day.
Crispe said Joliestar was such a talented mare she could easily bounce back now she was out to 1400m.
“Joliestar probably needs 1400m now and she’s too good a mare not to rate highly in this race,’’ he said.
“I feel the best value in the race could be Antino. He’s got a good fresh record and can run well at big odds.’’
