Champion Brisbane jockey Jimmy Orman has scored the opportunity of a lifetime – a contract to ride in the lucrative Asian riding mecca of Hong Kong.

Racenet can reveal Orman, a multiple Brisbane jockeys’ premiership winner, has accepted a short-term deal to boost the Hong Kong riding ranks.

It is rare that Hong Kong takes on a jockey who is yet to ride a Group 1 winner and Orman is also not a lightweight rider.

But he is a jockey of enormous talent, who has ridden with success on two stints in Dubai, and Hong Kong riding ranks were thinned after a fall in Sha Tin on Sunday that saw four jockeys injured including Zac Purton who will be sidelined for four to six weeks.

“For me, this is a dream come true,” Orman told Racenet.

“It’s a massive opportunity, especially for someone like me who is not a lightweight jockey.

“You never know what’s going to happen going over to Hong Kong and I will be doing my absolute best and hopefully luck falls my way.

“My goal would be to boot home some winners and try to stay over there as long as I can.

“I am over the moon.”

Orman, 27, follows in the footsteps of another Queensland rider, Ben Thompson.

Thompson initially went to Hong Kong on a short-term riding contract but has now made the city home.

Orman currently has a four-win lead in his bid to win another Brisbane riding title and he will be away in Hong Kong for at least six weeks, throwing the Brisbane premiership race wide open.

Orman, who suffered a gruesome injury last year when Prince Of Boom bit off the tip of his finger, is set to fly out to Hong Kong next Monday and take his first rides at Happy Valley next Wednesday.

His last rides in Queensland before heading to Hong Kong will be at Saturday’s Eagle Farm metropolitan meeting.
