Boss Lane gives Ron Quinton a rare double
RON Quinton had many Saturday winning doubles as a jockey but as a trainer Saturday’s upset win by Boss Lane at Canterbury provided his first.
RON Quinton had many Saturday winning doubles as a jockey but as a trainer Saturday’s upset win by Boss Lane at Canterbury provided his first.
Aided by a pre-race plan to find the fence, Boss Lane ($11) was left in front when nothing else wanted the front.
From there, jockey Sam Clipperton rated the four-year-old to perfection to hold off a fast-finishing Kristy Lee ($5.50) with favourite Coolring ($3.70) a battling third in the TAB Rewards Handicap (1250m).
‘’We thought he is a horse that likes to be right on the speed and even lead on the fence, and it was a pretty dominant win,’’ Quinton said.
Clipperton said while Boss Lane generally doesn’t relish heavy ground, a Canterbury heavy track is not usually a problem for him.
Boss Lane had only been to the course once before for a heavy-track win at his second start in 2013.
‘’It was a good effort by the horse,’’ Clipperton said.
“Ron did say before the race the horse would like to find the rail.’’
Quinton and Clipperton combined earlier in the day when Let’s Make It Rain saluted in the first race.
