2025 Vinery Stud Stakes runner-by-runner form assessments and selections
Racenet’s Clinton Payne presents his tips and form assessment for each of the runners in Saturday’s Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes at Rosehill.
The $750,000 Vinery Stud Stakes has drawn together a mix of classy and progressive fillies, with nine runners declared for the 2000m contest.
Here is a runner-by-runner analysis of every horse set to line up on Saturday.

Superstar filly that is probably the best staying three-year-old in Australia. She’s shooting for her seventh straight win with her last four wins coming in the VRC Oaks (2500m) and three Group 2 races, over 1400, 1600 and 2000m. A heavy track and/or the Sydney way are the only queries.
VERDICT: If she handles the conditions and the Sydney way – she wins.

2 – MOVIN OUT
Former Kiwi filly purchased by Yulong after her third in the 1000 Guineas (1600m) at Riccarton. Made her Aussie debut in the Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) and was the eye-catcher late, coming from back in the field in a slowly run race. Bred to relish the extra distance being by Stephanos (JPN) whose stock are performing stoutly.
VERDICT: Genuine each-way player.
Love conquers all. In the 1000 Guineas from Riccarton, it's Captured by Love who wins itâ¥ï¸

3 – POWERS OF OPAL
In the spring she was the filly that got closest to Treasurethe Moment, placing second in the Wakeful (2000m) and the VRC Oaks (2500m) but she’s struggled to keep up in two 2025 runs in the Surround (1400m) and Phar Lap (1500m). Proven over the trip and might be looking for the extra ground. Failed in two wet track runs.
VERDICT: Not going well enough.

4 – REAL CLASS
Former Kiwi filly that won the Group 2 Sir Patrick Hogan (2000m) after placing in the Group 2 Eight Carat (1600m). Kicked off her Aussie career in the Phar Lap (1500m) and only plodded home after they dawdled early. Proven over the trip but needs to lift.
VERDICT: Did nothing in the Phar Lap. Prepared to take on.
Real Class by name and real class by nature, as the Vadamos filly wins the Sir Patrick Hogan Stakes @Ellerslie_Races. (Race 7)

Snitzel filly that’s been hitting the line powerfully in each of her three runs this prep. Has never raced beyond 1600m but in her latest start in the Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) her last 600m was the best of the race and her last 200m split was only bettered by first and second, which had an easy time on speed. Proven on heavy.
VERDICT: One of the few proven wet trackers. Place best.

6 – BENAGIL
On trial at 2000m but her latest two 1600m performances in solid races would indicate she should handle the extra 400m and her grand-dam won a St Leger. In the most recent run, she was back and widest throughout before unleashing a strong finishing burst. Also beaten less than two lengths in the Thousand Guineas during the spring. Two from three on soft.
VERDICT: If she runs the trip and the favourite stubs her toe – she might be the one.

7 – VERONA ROSE
Exciting filly that is undefeated from three starts. Put away after winning her maiden at Kembla in November, returned in February and made it two from two at Wyong. Then stepped up to the Group 3 Kembla Grange Classic (1600m) and she stormed home to win. She’s by Castelvecchio out of a mare from a French staying family so 2000m looks within reach. Two from two on soft.
VERDICT: Ticks a few boxes. Hardest for the favourite to beat.
VERONA ROSE wins the Kembla Grange Classic!

A big win from the @GaryPortelli filly who makes it three from three as she arrives in time under @KPMcEvoy to take the Group 3 at @kemblaraces over a wall with Inevitable Truth second and Brigidine Gal third. @tabcomaupic.twitter.com/szczWB2Kyp
8 – CANNY QUEEN
Progressive filly that stepped up to Stakes grade when a respectable fifth, beaten less than a length in the Kembla Grange Classic. Has never raced beyond a mile but she’s by Victoria Derby winner Ace High out of a Zabeel mare so on pedigree the 2000m should be within reach. Has won on soft.
VERDICT: Should handle the step up in trip but is a class query.
9 – ELLA HAZEL
Late entry. Lightly raced filly that comes here off a solid 1600m $100,000 maiden win over 1600m at Wyong. Beautifully bred filly by the Derby winner Dundeel out of Spring Champion Stakes winner Maid In Heaven. On trial at the trip but pedigree says she will run it. One from one on heavy.
VERDICT: How many horses win Group 1s when it’s an afterthought? Not for me.
