No reason to overlook the three odds-on favourites at Randwick
THE three long odds on favourites, Overreach, It's A Dundeel and Black Caviar should all win at Randwick today.
THE three long odds on favourites, Overreach, It's A Dundeel and Black Caviar should all win at Randwick today while punters looking for better value for their dollar should get a big sight with the Kris Lees-trained Hathras in the Chairman's Quality (2600m).
After runaway wins at Rosehill and Warwick Farm, Hathras was a close-up seventh of 12 in the weight-for-age BMW (2400m) at Rosehill last week. He is much better weighted today with 53kg, 5kg less than favourite Julienas.
Race 1 (11.55)
Betting: $1.90 Il Cavallo, $2.90 Safeguard, $11 Divine Calling
Comment: Safeguard has speed, but is drawn awkwardly. He was impressive winning his only start at Flemington in December. Il Cavallo was just as impressive at his debut winning over 900m at Sandown last month - he hit the line in terrific style, but the opposition was weak. Zaba Zaba Doo, a winner here at his only run, is the pick of the locals ahead of Diamond Oasis and Divine Calling.
Bet: 2 Safeguard
Exotics: Box trifecta 2 Safeguard, 3 Diamond Oasis, 5 Zaba Zaba Doo, 6 Il Cavallo.
Race 2 (12.30)
Betting: $2.80 Toydini, $4.20 Flying Snitzel, $4.60 Tatra, $8 Lunar Rise, $9.50 Proverb
Comment: Gutsy Tatra can go to the front and dominate. If he repeats his third behind It's A Dundeel and Proisir in the Randwick Guineas two runs back, he will be hard to get past. Toydini, who bolted in against good opposition in the Phar Lap Stakes, will be suited by Randwick. Flying Snitzel is a definite hope on her best runs with Lunar Rise the query of the race.
Bet: 1 Tatra
Exotics: Box trifecta 1 Tatra, 2 Toydini, 4 Proverb, 5 Flying Snitzel
Race 3 (1.10)
Betting: $3.80 Unimpeachable, $6 Royal Descent, Queenstown, $7 Sail, $11 Hold Me Tight
Comment: Queenstown, a likely improver, and Coyote Miss could be the pacesetters with Royal Descent racing handy at this distance and Unimpeachable closer than usual from her good barrier. Her last run, after a tough run, was super and she will take beating. Royal Descent has class and Gold Epona, Sail and Windbender (suited by distance) have hopes.
Bet: 3 Unimpeachable
Exotics: Box trifecta 1 Royal Descent, 3 Unimpeachable, 6 Queenstown, 9 Wind Bender
Race 4 (1.50)
Betting: $3.40 Julienas, $3.80 Hathras, $8 Permit, $9 Mourayan, $11 Vatuvei
Comment: Julienas is in dashing form and will try and dominate from the front again, but can he give 5kg to Hathras, who ran such a good race at WFA in the BMW last week? Mourayan, improved by two runs in Melbourne, is classy and will race close to the pace and Permit is a strong stayer not far off a win. Tremec could be the best of the rest with Vatuvei and Coliseo rough hopes.
Bet: 11 Hathras
Exotics: Box trifecta 2 Julienas, 4 Permit, 9 Coliseo, 11 Hathras
Race 5 (2.30)
Betting: $1.55 Overreach, $11 Guelph, $13 Florid Affair, Villa Verde, $15 Charlie Boy
Comment: Overreach proved herself a class above her rivals in the Slipper and the only query here is if she can carry her 1200m form up to 1400m. I think she will. Stablemate Florid Affair, a very impressive recent midweek winner, is the interesting runner. Guelph is classy and will run well and Villa Verde did loom in the Slipper and might be fitter.
Betting: 7 Overreach
Exotics: Quinella 7 Overreach, 13 Florid Affair
Race 6 (3.10)
Betting: $5 Mahisara, $6 Havana Rey, $8 Alma's Fury, $9.50 Beaten UpComment: Havana Rey will adopt his usual tactics of striding clear with Mahisara likely to be right on his heels. Both will be hard to get past. Alma's Fury is suited coming back from 1900m and is racing in top form. Chris Waller has five imports in the race with Class Is Class, Stout Hearted, Beaten Up and Moriarty all good chances. Raspberries is honest and in the mix.
Bet: 5 Alma's Fury
Exotics: Box trifecta 4 Havana Rey, 5 Alma's Fury, 12 Moriarty, 13 Mahisara
Race 7 (3.50)
Betting: $1.25 It's A Dundeel, $8 Philippi, $13 Hippopus, $17 Hvasstan, $26 High Shot
Comment: It's A Dundeel was a class above his Randwick and Rosehill Guineas rivals with the only query for him today being the 2400m as he was beaten in the Victoria Derby (2500m) in the spring. He is going better now. Philippi looked a young stayer on the up winning the Tulloch Stakes last week and is the danger. Hippopus will lead and could figure in the placings.
Bet: 1 It's A Dundeel
Exotics: 1 It's A Dundeel as standout in trifectas with 3 Philippi, 5 Hippopus, 8 Kingdoms
Race 8 (4.30)
Betting: $4.60 Arinosa, $8 Dystopia, Shamal Wind, $9 Karuta Queen, $11 Miss Stellabelle
Comment: Karuta Queen and Altar look the likely leaders with Satin Shoes, a roughie with a good chance, getting a good run close behind with Mrs Onassis. The grey Arinosa is flying and is the one to look out for in the straight while Dystopia, Soft Sand and Shamal Wind only need a little luck to be in the finish. Miss Stellabelle is honest and won't be far away.
Bet: 2 Satin Shoes
Exotics: Box trifecta 2 Satin Shoes, 4 Dystopia, 5 Arinosa, 7 Miss Stellabelle
Race 9 (5.10)
Betting: $1.10 Black Caviar, $11 Bel Sprinter, $26 Hay List, Rain Affair, Sea Siren
Comment: Rain Affair and Hay List should use their natural pace to lead with Black Caviar, the winner of 24 from 24, cruising behind them. You can expect Nolen to let the great mare stride clear before the 200m with Bel Sprinter likely to be the one to come out after her, but getting past her is another thing. Sea Siren and Decision Time are definite place chances.
Bet: 9 Black Caviar (or don't bet against her).
Exotics: 9 Black Caviar as standout in trifectas with 2 Bel Sprinter, 4 Decision Time, 10 Sea Siren
