Mike Moroney provides Jamie Mott with chance for his richest win in the All-Star Mile

Jamie Mott could be the latest jockey to post a career-high win on a Mike Moroney-trained runner in the $5m All-Star Mile at Flemington.

Mike Moroney would love to give another jockey the biggest win of their career in Saturday’s All-Star Mile.

Moroney’s faith in lower-profile jockeys has led to three riders gaining their biggest break with expat Kiwi over the years.

Kerrin McEvoy became a famous name in world racing with his win for Moroney on Brew in the 2000 Melbourne Cup before riding with great success overseas for several years.

Moroney also gave former champion apprentice Sebastian Murphy his maiden Group 1 win on Mr Baritone in the 2008 Stradbroke Handicap before repeating the dose with Patrick Moloney in last Saturday’s Group 1 Handicap.

Jockey Jamie Mott posted his career-best win on the Moroney-trained Sound in the Group Zipping Classic in the spring but will chase his richest payday on Tofane in the $5m All-Star Mile.

Mark Zahra rode Tofane to victory in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes at Caulfield two starts back but Mott will become the ninth jockey to ride Tofane in her 29th start on Saturday.

“She’s had a lot of different riders in her career but it’s just the way it has gone,” Moroney said.

Moroney had a choice of several jockeys to ride Tofane in the All-Star Mile but he said Mott had one key ingredient that would help the multiple Group 1 winner on Saturday.

Tofane has not won beyond 1400m.

Moroney said Mott’s style would give the five-year-old the chance to change that statistic from barrier seven at Flemington.

“He’s got a good set of hands and, if you watch him, he just drops over their neck and sits up on them,” Moroney said.

“He gets them to relax so well.

“That’s the key with her and her problem at the mile, she can get over-racing a little bit.

“That’s also why I wanted to draw a little bit better with her but Jamie will help that.

“That’s the reason I went for Jamie. I could have decided on a couple of others but that’s what I decided that I wanted.”

Tofane held firm at $15 in TAB’s All-Star Mile betting market after the barrier draw.

Outstanding Sydney galloper Zaaki eased from $3.20 to $3.40 after drawing the outside barrier while three-year-old Pinstriped has firmed from $8 to $6.
