Rekindling wins Melbourne Cup 2017

REKINDLING charged to victory in the Melbourne Cup but where did the rest of the field finish?

This is the final order from first to last so you can cry with joy — or anguish — over the horse you backed or drew in the office sweep.

First

REKINDLING (22) — Trainer: Joseph O’Brien, jockey: Corey Brown

“I can’t believe it,” jockey Corey Brown said. “Oh honestly, I chased the ride about six weeks ago and with a light weight (thinking I was) a big chance to get on him.

“I can’t believe it. I have been back here from overseas about nine months and slowly and surely getting back to where I was. Mate, again I can’t believe it.”

Winning owner Lloyd Williams was thrilled.

“An absolute dream. I am so thrilled,” he said. “It is terribly exciting. I can’t put it into words to be perfectly honest.

“Just to do it with this 24-year-old (trainer Joseph O’Brien). He has been taking the world on. I thought that this horse had some chance and I thought that his run in the Ledger was good and his three-year-old form over there has been very good in the Doncaster Cup.”

Second

JOHANNES VERMEER (7) — Trainer: Aidan O’Brien, jockey: Ben Melham

Melham: “We had a good run throughout the race. I was spending the money at the furlong (200m), I thought we were home but probably the weight was the difference.”

Third

MAX DYNAMITE (9) — Trainer: Willie Mullins, jockey: Zac Purton

Purton: “It was an excellent run, very brave. He took the tight run when I asked him to and I thought when he got through there he’d really fight but it was a terrific effort anyway.”

Fourth

BIG DUKE (13) — Trainer: Darren Weir, jockey: Blake Avdulla

Avdulla: “He was awesome. I had a perfect run and followed Corey (Brown) through and I thought I was half a chance on the corner but he ran out of his skin.”

The rest of the results are as follows:

5. NAKEETA (18) — Trainer: Iain Jardine, jockey: Glynn Schofield

Schofield: “Super run. He just kept coming strongly, it was a good run.”

6. THOMAS HOBSON (21) — Trainer: Wicklow Brave, jockey: Ben Allen

Allen: “He probably switched off a bit too well, he just didn’t pick up the bridle at all early. Once I steadied up they kind of sprinted away from us but I thought he ran really well.”

7. TIBERIAN (4) — Trainer: Alan Couetil, jockey: Olivier Peslier

Peslier: “I hit the front a little bit too soon for me. From the straight he was coming well but just over the last 200m he weakened.”

8. LIBRAN (17) — Trainer: Chris Waller, jockey: Dwayne Dunn

Dunn: “He ran really well, as good as he could run and to finish top 10 was a great effort.”

9. MARMELO (5) — Trainer: Hughie Morrison, jockey: Hugh Bowman

Bowman: “I expected a bit more. I had to make a little bit of use of him early but I had a nice position and he relaxed well. The pressure built a bit earlier than I would’ve liked I must admit but I thought he would’ve taken me a bit further.”

10. WICKLOW BRAVE (12) — Trainer: Willie Mullins, jockey: Stephen Baster

Baster: “He ran well but he just didn’t have any early speed so I ended up last and then I didn’t get going until 650 and he got home good.”

11. RED CARDINAL (6) — Trainer: Andreas Wohler, jockey: Kieren McEvoy

McEvoy: “He ran into it with nice aggression around the corner and got into the clear but I think he just felt the ground over the last furlong-and-a-half (300m). I think (the track being rated) a Soft 5 or a Soft 6 would be better for him out here.”

12. ALMANDIN (2) — Trainer: Robert Hickmott, jockey: Frankie Dettori

Dettori: “I was stuck three-wide but the horse was flat. He never carried me today and ran like a flat horse.”

13. CISMONTANE (24) — Trainer: Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, jockey: Beau Mertens

Mertens: “I’m happy with the performance. Obviously a lot of good horses finished in front of him but he did the best he could.”

14. AMELIE’S STAR (23) — Trainer: Darren Weir, jockey: Dean Yendall

Yendall: “I expected a bit more of a genuine tempo which got us stuck out (wide) and it wasn’t ideal the run we had, I would’ve liked to have had a bit more cover during the early stages of the race. I was still patient as obviously I’d been trapped wide and I didn’t want to get going too early so I let her be happy and let her work into it at the top of the straight but she just didn’t see out the two miles (3200m) without that bit of cover. I’d like to have it over again and see if she’d be better with a bit of cover.”

Happiness for some, despair for others.

15. BOOM TIME (15) — Trainers: David and B Hayes and T Dabernig, jockey: Cory Parish

Parish: “It was probably just a bit too slow of a tempo for him. He’s probably better suited at a mile-and-a-half (2400m) were there’s a little bit more speed in the race.”

16. WALL OF FIRE (20) — Trainer: Hugo Palmer, jockey: Craig Williams

Williams: “It was a muddling, stop and start race and I thought my horse responded really well under those conditions. He came off the bridle at the 700m which is normally to his liking and when I cut the corner and balanced him up I expected him to stay on but he didn’t stay on at all today so hopefully he comes through the race well. He just didn’t run up to his European form.”

17. SINGLE GAZE (19) — Trainer: Nick Olive, jockey: Kathy O’Hara

O’Hara: “She was knocked around a lot in the race and never had a lot of luck in running. She was brave enough to run past a couple late but it was just too rough for her.”

18. US ARMY RANGER (14) — Trainer: Joseph O’Brien, jockey: Jamie Spencer

Spencer: “He passed a few beaten ones but I never thought he’d win.”

19. HUMIDOR (3) — Trainer: Darren Weir, jockey: Blake Shinn

Shinn: “He just doesn’t run two miles (3200m), it’s as simple as that. He gave me a nice ride throughout but when the pressure went on he didn’t respond.”

20. HARTNELL (1) — Trainer: James Cummings, jockey: Damian Lane

Lane: “He didn’t see it out today. He settled in a lovely rhythm and at the 400 I knew he wasn’t going to run (the distance) out.”

21. VENTURA STORM (10) — Trainers: David and B Hayes and T Dabernig, jockey: Glen Boss

Boss: No comment

22. BONDI BEACH (8) — Trainer: Robert Hickmott, jockey: Michael Walker

Walker: “I don’t think his mind really wants to be there at the moment. He tried to run through the fence for the first 50m of the race.”

Last

GALLANTE (16) — Trainer: Robert Hickmott, jockey: Michael Dee

Dee: “He was very disappointing. The track was obviously a little bit too dry for him but I didn’t expect him to go that badly.”

Scratched
