Melbourne Cup betting: $100k for first four, punter turns $1 bet into $150k

There was plenty of betting value to had at the Melbourne Cup, and some luck could have landed you winnings of more than $100,000.

If like many you fancied a flutter on Melbourne Cup day, you’re either kicking yourself or revelling in the festivities.

Gold Trip won the big race and was a sensible pick at $15 with TAB and took the lead with more than 300m to run before Emissary looked to be making a challenge of it with 150m to go.

Deauville Legend was the overwhelming favourite and made a late run but ultimately finished fourth.

There was some serious value to be had, with the horses coming in second (Emissary) and third (High Emocean) betting outsiders.

You could have made a mammoth $100,000 if you picked the first four — Gold Trip, Emissary, High Emocean and Deauville Legend.

Channel 10 commentator Michael Felgate said: “If you backed Gold Trip: If you had 1, 17, 22 and 8 in the first four, there’s more than $100,000 coming your way. Sadly none of us got the first four but we have had an experience to remember.”

Earlier, one lucky Victorian punter landed the bet of the day, turning a $1 bet into more than $150,000.

The punter nailed the early quaddie at Flemington as Love Tap, High Approach, Renosu and Bartholemeu Diaz saluted at odds.
