Melbourne Cup 2015 weather: Racegoers guide to when it will rain at Randwick
YOU’RE one of 20,000 odd who have frocked up headed to Randwick. Right about now you are looking up at the grey skies and wondering what will be in store. Don’t worry, we have got you covered.
Well, you can’t have everything.
Most of us, by hook or by crook, will get the chance to watch the Melbourne Cup this afternoon, but spare a thought for the 20,000 or so who are at Randwick today.
For while Monday was mostly a sunny treat, today it is cool and drizzly, with grey skies expected to hang around all day.
The mercury is only tipped to reach 21C in the city, while there will also be 15 to 20km/h south to south easterly winds - so use some super glue to keep that fascinator in place.
RANDWICK TIPS:OUR EXPERT’S PREVIEW OF THE BUMPER 10 RACE CARD
The forecast is for showers, increasing in the evening with between 2mm and 6mm expected.
It’s a bit better south of the border. While the temperature is only predicted to reach 22C there is only a minimal chance of rain which bodes well for those punters hoping for a firm Flemington track.
YOUR RANDWICK RACE BY RACE WEATHER GUIDE
RACE 1: TAB MORE THAN JUST WINNING PLATE
11am (showers and 19C): You’re looking your best, the hairdo perfectly in place so a thin layer of drizzle that is expected to descend on Randwick is likely to cause some consternation. After all who brings a brolly to the races.
RACE 2: QUAYCLEAN HANDICAP
11.40 (cloudy and 20C): It’s one race into the day and you’re either on a high or thinking this could be a long and expensive day. You may also be cursing not checking the forecast and therefore neglecting a shawl or coat.
RACE 3: MCGRATH ESTATE AGENTS ACT HANDICAP
12.20pm (cloudy and 20C): Hopefully by now the drizzle has abated and your Melbourne Cup Day is in full swing. You’re rejoicing ditching work (or being smart enough to organise a day off) and the weather is the last thing on your mind. If you have called in sick, stay away from the cameras, otherwise this day could be more expensive than it already is.
RACE 4: MCGRATH ESTATE AGENTS QLD HANDICAP
1pm (cloudy and 21C): You’ve now got a fair idea about how today may pan out. Chances are you’re also six drinks in and that warm beer jacket is hopefully keeping you snug because the sun certainly isn’t. Eat now, you’re still two hours away from the big race and you can’t be one of those lying on the grass for the race that stops the nation.
RACE 5: GIRVAN WAUGH CONSTRUCTION HANDICAP
1.40pm (21C and cloudy): You’re halfway there, five down after this one and five to go - here anyway. The sun is in Melbourne so stop expecting it - it’s not coming. The crowd will be in full swing now, the best dressed awards and the fascinators are starting to look..well less fascinating.
RACE 6: MCGRATH ESTATE AGENTS VIC HANDICAP
2.25pm (21C and cloudy): McGrath sure likes to sponsor a race. This is number three and there’s still one more to come so there could possibly be some auction ads on the sides of these horses (now there’s an idea!). In five minutes you’ll also know if the Reserve Bank has dropped interest rates so you might have a few extra bucks for the big race!
RACE 7: MCGRATH ESTATE AGENTS NSW HANDICAP
3.35pm (20C and cloudy): Still wet. Still cloudy. Still dreary...but who cares? The party’s in full swing now, you’re wallet’s either bulging or feeling very thin. The queue for taxis is overflowing with losers who can’t stand to be around those obnoxious friends who have been winning all day. Don’t worry, there’s always next year.
RACE 8: SCHWEPPES HANDICAP
4.15pm (19C and cloudy): If you’re still here, congratulations. You’ve done well.
RACE 9: TASK RETAIL TECHNOLOGY SPRINT
4.55pm (19C and cloudy with a possibility of rain): Head inside for this race because the Bureau are predicting the rain to start falling around now. Alternatively embrace it - if you’ve come this far there’s a good chance you don’t really care and probably won’t feel those drops anyway.
RACE 10: INTERNATIONAL PREMIER EVENTS HANDICAP
5.35pm (who really cares what the weather is): You’ve made it to the end and you can now navigate your way around the strewn bodies that litter the grass. The weather is the furthest thing from your mind and you’re either on your way to spend your winnings or spend someone elses.
