Matt Jones’s extended preview and tips for Rosehill Gardens

ROSEHILL

Track: Good 4. Rail: Out 3m

Race 1

Overview: I want to be on Astero here. His trainer Matt Smith said he really needed the first-up run when he was looking good on the line first-up when running two and a half lengths sixth at Randwick. Either Oar has drawn a touch awkward given his racing pattern but he’s got super form around him of late and should go close again. Verbek can’t be dismissed while Black Duke pops up occasionally and causes a surprise.

Betting Advice: Astero to win

Race 2

Overview: Sir Ravanelli gets a much better draw now after flashing home for third in a Highway last weekend while come of his rivals in the market have drawn out. He can throw a race away but it looks like it’s about to all come together which puts him on top. I liked the trial of Zadig and his trainer Jean Dubois is often underestimated. Some luck is needed from the wide gate and the same can be said for To The Nines who is going very well.

Race 3

Overview: A competitive race with three stand outs. If King Frankel controls it in front, he’s going to be very hard to run down. He won last start over 2140m at the midweeks when having a bit in hand on the line which bodes well for this run. Pale King is on the quick back up after winning here over 1900m last weekend and he gets a dry track again which is the key for him. Our Candidate won a lesser race last but before that he went super behind Quality Time in the Port Cup. He’s not a query at 2400m either.

Bet: King Frankel to win

Race 4

Overview: It’s hard to see Willinga Rufio and Naval Seal not fighting out the finish here. Naval Seal has got the better of Willinga Rufio the past two times they’ve met but the former does have fitness on his side so today’s the day to get one back with a little weight pull. Sindacato looks ready for 1800m now after racing well at a mile against Money From The Sky last start. Colour Sargent is looking for this trip now and has to be a big improver third-up.

Betting Advice: Sindacato to win

Race 5

Overview: Per Inaway won here fresh last prep and went well in two runs after it against the likes of Bella Rouge, Cross Talk and Titanium Power. She trialled up in comfortable fashion and has Hugh Bowman booked from an ideal gate. Fox Fighter is fourth-up and going great this prep. He will enjoy getting back on to a drier track on Saturday from a good draw and there’s no query with him so he’s got to be looking the winner at some point. Bend The Knee has the class to run in the top three here and Matt Dale could’ve run Tortetto in a weaker race at Albury on Friday but likely goes to this one.

Race 6

Overview: Shine Your Light has drawn inside (3) while the two horses that beat her on debut, Barber and Coincide, have drawn very wide and that’s a big no-no over from the 1100m start at Rosehill. Coincide will try and come across them but will burn a lot of energy doing it. Stablemate Summer Loving looked quite professional in winning a barrier trial and has drawn well enough to sit outside the leader in the run. The latest trial of Maharba also looked the goods and he went quicker and has drawn better too. If he gets a run he’s the one to look at due to the better price.

Race 7

Overview: Jamaea gets back on top of the ground now which is key to her chances. She will have to give them a start but she has the best turn of foot over 250m in this race and she looks nice value at around the $12 mark as Expat puts the speed on for her. It’s hard to knock Electric Girl after what she’s done this prep including nearly winning the Sheraco against Everest runner Shades Of Rose and the Invitation last start. She’s got barrier five with Bowman on. Hard to knock. Samoot is on fire but on wet ground and this is a rise in class. Sheeza Bleter didn’t get a good crack at them in the Invitation so forgive her eighth placing.

Betting Advice: Jamaea to win

Race 8

Overview: If this was over 1600m Ellsberg would be near unbeatable. Running an extra 200m is what gets him beat if he loses. He gets favours from the inside gate but I don’t think he’ll run the trip. Laws Of Indices will and he comes here off a top Cox Plate run and that’s by far the best form of any horse going into this. Rustic Steel has drawn awkward so probably goes back from the gate while Aryton is here at the right time of his preparation.

Race 9

Overview: I Am Me probably box seats in behind Winning Verse here. I Am Me looks well placed off a comfortable looking barrier trial which suggests she’s come back in fine order. Winning Verse just got run down by a smart one last week at this track and if she controls the race, which looks likely, she’ll kick and give a good sight. If Hypothetical runs she’s right in it and stalks them on the fence.

Betting Advice: I Am Me to win

Race 10

Overview: Arnaqueur is back off a 12-week let up and he flies off a break and won with ease last start over Conqueror but the Rosehill track is a query with him. His trial looked great. Bella Rouge will be better for the first-up run and is also more suited over 1400m now and on a drier track so there’s a lot of things pointing to a better result today. I Am Lethal might be on his last chance after running below expectations last time out.

Betting Advice: Arnaqueur to win
