Kingston Town Classic: James Cummings confident Best Of Days can end year on high in Group 1

James Cumming believes the weight-for-age conditions of the Kingston Town Classic will work in favour of Best Of Days as he looks to land the last Group 1 of the year.

James Cumming believes the weight-for-age conditions of the Kingston Town Classic (1800m) will work in favour of Best Of Days as he looks to land the last Group 1 of the year.

Best Of Days went close to winning the Railway Stakes (1600m) in Perth but lost to Regal Power by half a length.

Cummings is confident he can turn the tables on him as under the weight-for-age conditions of the Kingston Town Classic, he will meet Regal Power 3.5kg better.

In the spring, Best Of Days finished third behind Homesman in the Group 2 Feehan Stakes at The Valley. Cummings said Best of Days was in similar condition to Railway Stakes day.

“I was in Perth last weekend and he showed me then that he was in very good order and the reports since have been good,” Cummings said.

“At this stage I can say he has maintained that form.

“He found one a bit better in the Railway Stakes, but he’s better of under these conditions and we know he’ll cope with the extra distance. He’ll be a worthy competitor.”

Brad Rawiller, who rode him in the Railway Stakes, keeps the mount.

Best of Days is a $9.50 chance behind the Bob Peters-owned and Grant and Alana Williams-trained pair, boom three-year-old filly Tuscan Queen ($3.50) and Regal Power ($8.50).

Cummings will also be represented by tough competitor Tally, who will be having his eighth start at Group 1 level.

His last start in a Group 1 was in the Doomben Cup, in which he ran seventh.

His Group 1 placings were in 2016 when he finished third in the Australian Derby and Turnbull Stakes.

Cummings said Tally could run a race at big odds.

“I’d say he will be at the most competitive level he could be in a Group 1 race,” he said.

Irish jockey Martin Harley will ride Tally.
