IN the saddle former champion jockey Kevin Moses just about did it all.

Three Sydney jockey premierships, over 2000 winners, 22 group 1 triumphs before going on to enjoy a near 20-year training career which included guiding No Wine No Song to victory in the 2008 Group 1 Sydney Cup.

In doing so Moses became the first person to both ride and train a winner in the two-mile showpiece having been aboard 1989 victor Palace Revolt.

But these days it’s greyhound racing which enlivens Moses’ interest in racing, sharing in the ownership of recently minted NSW Straight Track Championship winner Oscar Moses.

Next Saturday the gifted yet injury prone chaser, trained by Jason Magri, will head to Healesville in Victoria to represent NSW in the Group 3 National Straight Track Championship.

“I actually picked this fella out as a pup on the advice of trainer Ricky Brewer,” Moses recalled.

“He’s the second dog I’ve owned with my good mate Sam Mayer and we’re having a ball with him.

“It was a big thrill to see him win last week and it’s exciting to be off to Melbourne for the big final.

“I had planned on being there for it but I’ve been invited by a friend to be on a yacht in Hamilton Island at the same time so I’ve decided to go that way.

“But I’ll be watching and cheering him on from afar.”

A hulking son of Barcia Bale and grand producer My Lady Day, Oscar Moses has had his share of injuries, restricting the regally bred sprinter to just 23 starts, for 12 wins, despite being over three years of age.

“Jason has done a wonderful job keeping him together as he’s had his share of issues along the way,” Moses said.

“He’s been extremely patient with him and with his problems straight racing has been a real blessing for him.”

In taking out the NSW Straight Track decider, Oscar Moses ended the Richmond winning streak of superstar Shall Not which also booked a trip to Melbourne with his second placed finish.

Shall Not, a 31-time winner, is owned by former league star Terry Hill.

“It was good to get one over Terry - I’ve known him forever,” Moses said.

“Our sons actually played football together so there’s been a connection there for a long time.

“It’s not easy to travel interstate and take on the locals and if we can’t win I’d love to see Shall Not win for Terry. As long as it‘s a NSW win.”

And on the rugby league theme, it’s another former great Moses will bring into greyhound ownership in the not too distant future.

“I’m on the lookout for a dog for Joey (Andrew Johns),” Moses said.

“He’s keen to get involved in one - I’ve just got to find the right one for him now.”

It’s been a little more than two years since Moses walked away from thoroughbred training, effectively ending his illustrious career in the code.

“I don’t really follow the horses much these days,” Moses, who rode former top-line horse Stylish Century throughout his career, said.

“I just tune in for the big races. I did miss it at the start but being able to get up at 7am these days instead of 4am isn’t bad.”
