Ken Callander believes Fiorente will be back with a bang at Caulfield
OUR expertKen Callander says Fiorente should return with a win at Caulfield, while also finding specials at Randwick.
Gai Waterhouse’s Melbourne Cup winner Fiorente should make a triumphant return to racing in the Peter Young Stakes at Caulfield today.
On a day where there are terrific cards in both Melbourne and Saturday, Fiorente’s comeback should create as much interest as the clash of the star colt Rubick and the ace filly Earthquake in the Blue Diamond Stakes.
In Sydney the big interest will be whether Boban can turn the tables on his last start conqueror Appearance in the Apollo Stakes and whether Guelph, the star three-year-old filly of the Spring, can resume her career as a winner in the Light Fingers Stakes.
Race 1 Sydney (1.20)
Betting: $3.20 Double Happy, $4.80 Valentia, $5.50 Mr Bogart, $7 Khrysler, $7.50 Passaparole
Comment: Two-year-olds out to 1200m and this should suit Double Happy, who has sound race form and has trialled in good style. Valentia did well when third to Rubick at only run, but was beaten a long way and there is a good track tip for the unraced Mr Bogart. Khrysler, placed at only two runs, is a hope and Greco, now with Team Hawkes, has speed and could be an improver.
Bet: 1 Double Happy
Exotics: Quinella 1 Double Happy, 6 Mr Bogart
Race 2 (1.57)
Betting: $1.85 Our Desert Warrior, $3.20 Monton, $7 Unimpeachable, $8 Lunayir
Comment: Our Desert Warrior was disappointing first-up and is short odds, but he gets 6kg off his main rival Monton and he looks to get a jog trot in front. If Sam Clipperton is proactive on Monton and sits outside the favourite he could be good enough to beat him, but the weight is a big thing. Unimpeachable caught the eye first-up and can’t be ignored but the others look to be safely held.
Bet: 4 Our Desert Warrior
Exotics: Trifecta straight out 4 Our Desert Warrior, 1 Monton, 8 Unimpeachable
Race 3 (2.32)
Betting: $3.80 Divertire, $4.60 Forever Crazy, $5 Smart Moochi, Transonic, $8 The Hotz
Comment: Divertire did not have much luck behind Forever Crazy last run and an appentice has given way to a senior rider this time. Both have good hopes again. Transonic will lead and is racing in good form and will give a big sight. Smart Moochi’s last two runs have been sound and Boogie Shoes and The Hotz round out the chances.
Bet: 4 Divertire
Exotics: Box trifecta 3 Boogie Shoes, 4 Divertire, 6 Transonic, 7 Forever Crazy
Race 4 (3.07)
Betting: $3.40 Terravista, $4 That’s A Good Idea, $6 Albrecht, $6.50 Toydini, $7 Dances On Stars
Comment: Joe Pride dominates the market with two first uppers - Terravista looks the better fresh horse and is well placed while That’s A Good Idea is the likely leader. Albrecht has won first-up and has raced some good horses and Toydini is all class, but might want a touch further than 1200m. Dances On Stars is in career best form and is the knockout.
Bet: 5 Albrecht
Exotics: Box trifecta 1 Toydini, 5 Albecht, 6 Dances On Stars, 10 Terravista
Race 5 (3.42)
Betting: $1.90 Guelph, $5 Sweet Idea, $8.50 Real Surreal, $9.50 Champagne Cath
Comment: Guelph was pipped first up last preparation, but she looks to get fair speed here and she has trialled well. She should be too classy. Sweet Idea is a tip, but beat inferior opposition at the Gold Coast and I am more scared of Champagne Cath, who is a last start Randwick winner, or the speedy Thump. Real Surreal has class but hasn’t raced for 13 months.
Bet: 1 Guelph
Exotics: Quinella 1 Guelph as standout with 4 Thump and 10 Champagne Cath
Race 6 (4.17)
Betting: $4.60 Leebaz, Specific Choice, $6 Seaside, Gamblestown, $12 Canny Ballad
Comment: Good value tip in Canny Ballad, who is two from two second up and he hit the line in great style when first-up second to Target In Sight. Leebaz, first-up, won three last time in and he looks to set the pace from Reflectance. Specific Choice has lost a few at short odds, but is consistent and consider Seaside, Gamblestown, Bugaboo, Pillow Talk and Earnest Ernest.
Bet: 3 Canny Ballad
Exotics: Box trifecta 3 Canny Ballad, 4 Reflectance, 7 Leebaz, 8 Specific Choice
Race 7 (4.52)
Betting: $2.30 Boban, $2.80 Appearance, $4.80 Speediness, $9.50 Rain Drum
Comment: Boban is sure to run better than he did first-up, but he has ground to make up to beat Appearance. The knock for Appearance is she has not won in five second-up runs, but Guy Walter considers she might be fitter this preparation. Speediness was slow away in the Expressway and has to be considered.
Bet: 10 Appearance
Exotics: Exacta 10 Appearance, 1 Boban
Race 8 (5.27)
Betting: $4 She’s Clean, $5.50 Jolie Bay, $8.50 Gamba, $9 Any Day Will Do, Diamond Drille
Comment: She’s Clean and Jolie Bay represent class and both have trialled. She’s Clean raced well without a lot of luck last preparation while the knock for Jolie Bay is she has had one run in 15 months. The speed should be on with Southern Girl drawn the rails and a few speed horses drawn deep. Other chances are Emmalene, Any Day Will Do, Lilliburlero, More Than Brave and Recoinage.
Bet: 1 She’s Clean
Exotics: Box trifecta 1 She’s Clean, 3 Emmalene, 6 Lilliburlero, 10 Recoinage
Best Bet: Guelph
Value: Canny Ballad
WHO’S HOT
Guelph has already tightened from $1.95 to $1.90 in the Light Fingers and there could be a lot more money for her before post time.
WHO’S NOT
Not Listenin’tome was scratched from Randwick to run at Caulfield, but looks at short odds at odds on in the Zeditave Stakes.
DROP A HINT
Have bookies overreacted to Earthquake’s wide barrier in the Blue Diamond. She will be steaming home in the straight.
EYE CATCHER
Dystopia caught the eye in a quiet Rosehill trial and she goes great first-up. Watch for the Chris Waller mare in the Oakleigh Plate.
