Keen followers of form knew Madam Nash was going to lead by a big margin on Saturday

KEN Callander says Madam Nash was given her best chance on Saturday but was not good enough.

Kencella, ridden by James McDonald, is a pacey type that made the Run of the Day on Saturday.

The kid selling the Daily Telegraph at the front gate and the lady serving pies in the cafeteria both knew Madam Nash would open up a big lead on Saturday, and so too did everybody else who goes to the races every Saturday.

In case you had been out of town for a year or two even her trainer Chris Waller told you in a pre-race television interview she would open up a good lead.

Yet a few too lazy to do the form were looking for something sinister after the race when her stablemate, Junoob, the $2.35 favourite, steamed home and won.

Don't forget Madam Nash was a heavily backed second favourite and those who put their money on her were entitled to see her given every possible chance of winning. Madam Nash always leads, mostly by big margins, and at her most recent win at Warwick Farm in July she led by further than she did on Saturday.

In simple plain fact she was given her best chance on Saturday but was not good enough.

The last thing we want to happen is to stop tearaway tactics by free-striding front runners. If we do we will never see another Vo Rogue, Scotch And Dry or Stylish Century.

It was a poor crowd at Rosehill again on Saturday just another bi-product of the STC-AJC merger which has seen the home of the Golden Slipper relegated to a poor cousin of Randwick. And while we are at it when is the $40m promised to Rosehill going to be spent, the $150m that went to Randwick was spent quickly enough?

What about my good mates Ronny Dufficy and Ray Thomas leaving Boban out of their 10 top horses to follow for the Autumn in the Sunday Telegraph.

Ray is usually pretty sober, but Duff might have been on the drink. Boban set the racing world alight in the Spring when he won all five starts including Group Ones in Sydney and Melbourne. You can judge for yourself what he is likely to do in the Autumn when he resumes in the Expressway Stakes at Randwick on Saturday.

Malcolm Johnston will be getting jealous of young Chad Schofield.

Schofield's suspension for careless riding at Caulfield on Saturday will mean he has spent 64 days on the sidelines in the first six months of this season, a record to rival Miracle Mal's run-ins with stewards.

The kid's repeated infringements might be seen as reckless by some hard markers, but I think it is caused more by over enthusiasm and a will to win. If Chad learns his lesson and still retains his ability in the saddle he is good enough to finish in the M.Johnston class and that is saying something.

Gai Waterhouse is taking her time in finalising an exact program for Fiorente, but trust the Queen of Randwick to get it right and get your wallet ready for the day she does.

Fiorente, without blinkers, trialled OK at Randwick on Friday and he looks fit enough to run tomorrow. As well he has gone super in his two raceday hit-outs with Queen Elizabeth's horse Carlton House, where I suspect his jockeys were under strict instructions not to upstage Her Majesty's galloper.

It is incredible Peter and Paul Snowden will have a likelihood of 120 horses on their books when they start their Randwick training operation in May.

I don't know of anybody in Australian racing history who has started with such a big string and it just goes to show the high esteem the pair are held in. The big difference Peter and Paul will notice when they go private will not be training the horses but servicing so many owners, a job others have found beyond them.

RUN OF THE DAY

Kencella. Has the type of pace that could see him win a good sprint.

RIDE OF THE DAY

Padraig Beggy on Unequivocal. Just another addition to the strong band of jockeys we have in Sydney.

FORGET IT RAN

Madam Nash. Is going to find it hard to win with the better horses returning to racing.
