How to watch and live stream the 2024 Melbourne Cup

The 2024 Melbourne Cup is nearly here and there are plenty of ways to make sure you don’t miss a moment of the race that stops the nation.

The Melbourne Cup might have a new broadcasting home for 2024 but there are no shortage of ways to tune into the race that stops the nation this year.

Channel 9 have snapped up the rights to the Melbourne Cup until 2029 after Channel 10’s five-year, $100m TV rights deal from 2019 lapsed last year.

In 2024, the event will be held on Tuesday November 5, with Nine’s live coverage kicking off from 10am AEDT and finishing at 5.30pm AEDT.

The Melbourne Cup will be available to watch free-to-air on Channel 9 and to stream on 9Now.

The event will also be broadcast on Tabcorp’s Sky Racing channel and the TAB app.

Kayo Sports will also have live coverage of the race via the Racing.com channel and with users also able to watch footage on-demand, you can catch replays if you’ve just missed out on the big race.

Several radio stations will also be providing live commentary of the race including ABC local radio, SEN Radio, Nine Radio and Triple M in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide.

What time does the Melbourne Cup start?

The 2024 edition of the great race will take place on Tuesday, November 5 and will be run at 3pm (AEDT), although it usually starts a few minutes later as it takes time to get the horses into their gates.

To make life a bit easier, here are the times for each state.

Victoria, NSW, Tasmania (AEDT): 3pm

South Australia (ACDT): 2:30pm

Queensland (AEST): 2pm

Northern Territory (ACST): 1:30pm

Western Australia(AWST): 12pm

Melbourne Cup prize money

The Group 1 Melbourne Cup is a $8 million race. On top of the prize purse on offer, the winning connections will collect a 18-carat solid gold trophy valued at $250,000.

1st place wins $4.4 million. 2nd place wins $1.1 million. Third place wins $550,000.

How far do they run in the Melbourne Cup?

The staying race is run over 3200m.
