Godolphin colt Anamoe likely to miss Run To The Rose after setback

Anamoe’s spring preparations have hit a big hurdle with the gun colt doubtful to return in next month’s Run To The Rose.

Godolphin’s brilliant colt Anamoe has had a training setback placing concerns over his spring carnival program.

Trainer James Cummings revealed Anamoe was found to have an elevated temperature on Thursday and will be restricted to light exercise for the next few days.

“We advise that Anamoe threw a temperature overnight,’’ Cummings said on Thursday.

“As a consequence, I have decided to postpone some competitive gallops.

“The colt’s progress will be monitored in the coming days and a return to normal will see him resuming racing next month.’’

Cummings was readying Anamoe for a new season return in the Group 2 $200,000 Run To The Rose (1200m) at Rosehill on September 11.

This comeback run is important if Anamoe is to be at his peak for the Group 1 $1m Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens on September 25 where TAB fixed odds rate the Godolphin three-year-old as the $4.50 equal favourite with Stay Inside.

The news of Anamoe’s setback comes as Godolphin Australia supremo Vin Cox said veteran sprinter Trekking and not any of the stable’s crack three-year-olds is in their most likely choice for the $15m The TAB Everest this spring.

Trekking has contested the last two The Everests, running third to Yes Yes Yes in 2019 and fourth behind Classique Legend last year, and is being set for a third attempt at the world’s richest turf race.

Cox said seven-year-old Trekking is back in full work at Osborne Park and is in the prime position to be selected for Godolphin’s slot in The Everest, run at Royal Randwick on October 16.

“Our best sprinter is Trekking and at this stage he is likely to be our Everest nominee,’’ Cox said.

“James will weave his magic and set Trekking on a similar path to The Everest as last year I would suggest. The three-year-olds have a little way to go yet.’’

Trekking, trained by James Cummings, is rated at $51 in early TAB fixed odds betting while his younger stablemates Anamoe, Paulele and Ingratiating are all at $15.

Paulele (The Rosebud) and Ingratiating (Vain Stakes) have already made impressive comeback wins this month while ATC Sires Produce Stakes winner Anaome is likely to resume in the Run To The Rose in three weeks.

“It’s nice to have three-year-old colts like those three and our objective is to qualify them as stallion prospects then see what is revealed as the season goes on,’’ Cox said.

Meanwhile, trainer David Vandyke has conceded his plans to set unbeaten Queensland sprinter Orbisyn for The Everest and Golden Eagle in Sydney this spring are in doubt with four-year-old suffering from a hind leg problem.

Orbisyn, unbeaten in four starts, is back in light work with Vandyke setting a deadline of early next week to determine if the sprinter can be aimed at the Sydney spring carnival.

“We took X-rays and had the horse thoroughly checked and there was no definitive diagnosis,’’ Vandyke said.

“But Orbisyn is showing some improvement and is back at the pre-trainers doing light exercises.

“It’s held our preparation up and I’m not sure where we are going to get with him now but I think we will have a better idea next week.

“He’s such a talent we are going to concentrate on the horse not the calendar.’’
