Eddie McGuire’s off-air conversation accidentally played live in Channel 10 coverage

An off-air conversation between Eddie McGuire to co-host Rob Mills accidentally went to air during the Melbourne Cup coverage.

The pile on was ‘ugly’ for Eddie McGuire

An off-air conversation with Eddie McGuire appears to have accidentally shown to some viewers watching Channel 10’s coverage of the Melbourne Cup.

Twitter user Evan Davis shared a clip of an interaction between McGuire and Australian actor and host Rob Mills, which seemed to have been aired by accident.

Mr Davis, who lives in the UK, said he was watching the network’s coverage of the Melbourne Cup on Sky Sports Racing.

“Sky Sports Racing are airing @Channel10AU’s #MelbourneCup coverage without ads. Just a static card,” he wrote.

“I guess this conversation between Eddie McGuire and Rob Mills only aired in the UK.”

In the video Mills appears on the screen, with McGuire’s voice being heard greeting him.

“How’s it all going?” Mills asks, to which the host replies “we’re on fire”.

“I’m just having a look Ed and clouds are coming. How long do you give it?” Mills asked.

“If Millsy keeps standing up the sun will shine. We know where the sun shines from,” McGuire responded, prompting laughter from the two on screen.

“Thank you very much. Thanks mate. I appreciate that.”

The camera appears to be being set up throughout the conversation, with the shot shaking and panning around the room.

The Channel 10 commentator standing next to Mills is seen looking at her phone as they prepare to go live.

This came after views tuning into Channel 10’s coverage of the Melbourne Cup expressed their shock at seeing McGuire on the screen.

he is best known for hosting Channel 9’s Millionaire Hot Seat and Footy Classified, which is why so many viewers were surprised to see him hosting the rival network’s Melbourne Cup coverage.

While some were pleased to see McGuire taking charge, others took to social media to complain about the move.

“Still gobsmacked Channel 9 would even consider letting Eddie McGuire HOST Channel 10’s #MelbourneCup!” one person wrote.

“How times have changed. Think it says a lot about how the former perceive the latter, if it were 7 … Don’t think so.”

Another person asked if they had “travelled back to the early 1990s” after seeing McGuire on Channel 10.

“Eddie McGuire, well that says a lot, not having any interest in horse racing today …” another person wrote.

McGuire welcomed by Network 10

The move was actually announced back in June, with Network 10 confirming reports that McGuire would host the 2022 Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The network confirmed the TV personality would still continue to host Millionaire Hot Seat and Footy Classified for Channel 9.

“I’m excited to return to 10 where I started my career all those years ago, coming on-board as part of the fantastic Melbourne Cup Carnival team,” McGuire said in a statement.

“Racing has always been a passion of mine and I can’t wait for this year’s Carnival – it’s an honour in conjunction with VRC and 10 to bring the joy, fun, history and glamour of this world event back to new heights post Covid.”

Director of Sport Production at Paramount Australia and New Zealand, Adam Cush, praised the host’s experience and “extensive sports broadcasting skills”.

Victoria Racing Club Chairman, Neil Wilson, said the club was “delighted to welcome Eddie McGuire as the host of Network 10’s Melbourne Cup Carnival coverage”.

“Eddie is an incredible talent who is passionate about sport and major events across the country,” he said in a statement.

“Eddie has been a regular attendee at the Melbourne Cup Carnival and his involvement will no doubt continue to increase the coverage of Cup week in Australia and internationally.

“Eddie will work with a fantastic team, including Michael Felgate, Caty Price, Brittany Taylor and Lexus Melbourne Cup winning jockey, Michelle Payne. Their expertise and experience is going to make for a magnificent Cup Week broadcast.”

McGuire resigns over Collingwood racism report

McGuire copped a large amount of backlash earlier this year, after he denied there was “systematic racism” at Collingwood football club following the release of a bombshell report.

The Herald Sun exclusively obtained the 35-page report compiled by Professor Larissa Behrendt and Professor Lindon Coombes, which shines a damning spotlight on the culture at Collingwood.

The report claimed the club was guilty of fostering systematic racism that resulted in profound and enduring harm to First Nations and African players”.

The findings come at the end of an independent investigation following claims of racism by former Magpies defender Heritier Lumumba. The report said a separate investigation into his circumstances was warranted and claimed “there is a gap between what Collingwood Football Club says it stands for and what it does”.

In a press conference following the release of the report, McGuire denied there was systematic racism in the club, saying he was “extremely proud” of the “great things” the club had achieved.

“What’s happened on my watch is we’ve built a fantastic club, we’ve commissioned this report, we’ve built all sorts of mechanisms for getting involved in the community, like looking after the homeless … of which we are very proud,” he said.

“It was not systemic racism, as such, we just didn’t have the processes to deal with it that we do now.

“I don’t think there’s any shame or disappointment here … this is a day of pride.”

After facing heated backlash, McGuire made the decision to resign as Collingwood’s president.

“I tried my best and I don’t always get it right, but I don’t stop trying,” he said while fighting back tears during a press conference in February.

“Today, effective immediately, I step down from the presidency of the Collingwood Football Club.”
