Darley pair Sessions and Guelph ready to fire first-up
Australia's favourite tipster, Ken Callander, says Sessions' big finishing burst can fire Darley - and punters - to victory at Randwick
SESSIONS, an excitement machine with his big finishing burst, can headline a big day for the Peter Snowden-Darley stables by winning the Concorde Stakes (1000m) at Randwick this afternoon.
Another of the Darley runners who will be popular with punters is the classy filly Guelph, last season's two-year-old of the year, who will resume racing in the Furious Stakes, 1200m.
Sessions loves the speed on in his races and it looks like he will be catered for in the Concorde with Hay List, Mrs Onassis, I'm All The Talk and Kuroshio all having speed to burn.
Race 1 (12.40) Randwick
Betting: $2.50 Spurtonic, $4.60 Acapela, $6.50 Marden, $7 Tonopah, $11 Assertive Billy
Comment: Spurtonic's last start win was exaggerated when he had a very soft lead, but he still did the job well and is a stayer on the up. Tonopah caught the eye at W. Farm last start and is looking for the 2000m and Acapela should have no trouble with the journey after a strong 1600m win at the Farm. Marden can improve on last week and the import Junoob is a big query.
Bet: 7 Spurtonic
Exotics: Quinella 7 Spurtonic, 13 Tonopah
Race 2 (1.15)
Betting: $4.40 Photon Willie, $5.50 Masahiko, $6.50 The Gallows, Magic In The Mix, $7 Gangster's Choice, Canny Ballad
Comment: With the stewards advising Magic In The Mix will be ridden back in the field, Masahiko should lead unopposed with Gangster's Choice, with the allowance, also going forward. Both have strong chances as does the erratic Photon Willie, who has potential plus. Canny Ballad is consistent and right in it and The Gallows was very impressive over 1500m at Hawkesbury last run.
Bet: 9 The Gallows
Exotics: Box trifecta 2 Gangster's Choice, 6 Canny Ballad, 7 Photon Willie, 9 The Gallows
Race 3 (1.50)
Betting: $2.20 Sessions, $6 Hay List, $7.50 Whittington, $10 See The World
Comment: Kuroshio, I'm All The Talk, Hay List, Mrs Onassis and Whittington will ensure there is speed aplenty and this will suit the exciting Sessions, who went super in a recent trial. Hay List, now an eight-year-old, trialled reasonably, but has to be taken on trust. Whittington is a query, See The World will be suited by the hot speed and Decision Time and Golden Sunshine are not hopeless.
Bet: 8 Sessions
Exotics: Trifecta 8 Sessions as a standout with 4 See The World, 9 Whittington, 10 Golden Sunshine
Race 4 (2.30)
Betting: $2 Guelph, $7.50 Forever Loved, $8.50 Dream Forward, $9 Romantic Moon
Comment: Some horses don't mature after being top two-year-olds, but, on the evidence of her appearance and her form in a recent trial, Guelph seems to have taken the step. I think the toughest opponents will be Blimp, who showed good fight winning at Warwick Farm. Romantic Moon, Shahad, Bound For Earth and Forever Loved are capable of running placings.
Bet: 1 Guelph
Exotics: Quinella 1 Guelph, 3 Thump
Race 5 (3.10)
Betting: $5 Aussies Love Sport, Open Book, $6.50 Vilanova, $7.50 Champagne Cath, $8.50 Teronado
Comment: The unbeaten Open Book ($11 to $5) has the pace to lead with Aussies Love Sport also going forward after an on pace win at Rosehill. Champagne Cath has to be taken on trust after two failures. Vilanova is sure to improve on his first-up fourth in good company and Dowdstown Charlie will hit the line. The watch is the Waterhouse-trained Hydro who ran well first-up at Canterbury.
Bet: 10 Hydro
Exotics: Box trifecta 2 Vilanova, 4 Dowdstown Charlie, 10 Hydro, 12 Open Book
Race 6 (3.50)
Betting: $4.60 Fawkner, $4.80 Royal Descent, $6 Shoot Out, Sincero, $8 Sacred Falls
Comment: Not a lot of speed for this class of race with perhaps Fast Clip leading it up. Royal Descent is classy and will have benefited by a first-up run, but does she need further? Shoot Out and Sincero have been at the top for a while, but are both smart and Sincero trialled particularly well. Sacred Falls, first-up, is in the mix and the Melbourne galloper Fawkner is good and goes terrific first-up.
Bet: 8 Fawkner
Exotics: Box trifecta 2 Sincero, 4 Sizzling, 8 Fawkner, 9 Royal Descent
Race 7 (4.30)
Betting: $3.80 Veyron, $4.40 Beaten Up, Bayrir, $6.50 Hawkspur, $10 Metal Bender
Comment: It looks like Veyron, the Warwick Stakes winner from a fortnight ago, versus Chris Waller with the stable having six runners. Veyron can handle the 1600m and, with a good draw, looks the one to beat, but Beaten Up, Hawkspur and Metal Bender all caught the eye behind him and all are full of improvement. Bayrir has top overseas form and ran second at his only local start.
Bet: 2 Veyron
Exotics: Box trifecta 1 Metal Bender, 2 Veyron, 3 Beaten Up, 11 Hawkspur
Race 8 (5.10)
Betting: $3.60 That's A Good Idea, $4.80 Heart Testa, $8 Ashokan, Field Marshall, Never Can Tell
Comment: That's A Good Idea blitzed them with an all the way win at the midweeks last run and should lead clearly again from Heart Testa and Field Marshall, both of whom have the form to be hard to beat. Never Can Tell has ability, but was a touch disappointing first-up. The mares, Sharnee Rose and Jade Marauder have both trialled in good style and look well placed.
Bet: 12 Field Marshall
Exotics: Box trifecta 1 Sharnee Rose, 4 Jade Marauder, 10 That's A Good Idea, 12 Field Marshall

WHO'S HOT
TAB Fixed Odds has the Darren Weir-trained glamour horse Puissance De Lune a $1.95 in the Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington and it is doubtful he will ease too much.
WHO'S NOT
Craig Williams' mount Keep Cool is suited by the 2000m in the third at Flemington, but he looks at short odds at $3.40 on TAB Fixed Odds.
DROP A HINT
The Peter Snowden galloper Long John was all at sea behind Cauthen at Moonee Valley last start, but he will be suited by Flemington in the second today and can turn the tables.
EYE CATCHER
Jade Marauder, classy, but out of the winning list for a while, has caught the eye in two recent trials and can give a big sight in the last at Randwick.
