Chris Waller’s nervous phone call to the Queen about Sydney Cup runner Chalk Stream
Even when you train for the Queen, master trainer Chris Waller found out there’s a protocol that still needs to be followed.
Chris Waller can appreciate the scene from the hit Netflix series, The Crown, where the nervous racehorse trainer called his owner, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, on race morning to provide an update about her runners.
Waller, the nation’s premier trainer, was in that very position this week as he placed a call to the Queen, owner of Chalk Stream, a starter in the Group 1 $2m Schweppes Sydney Cup (3200m) run at Royal Randwick on Saturday.
There are certain protocols Waller must follow including strictly adhering to the schedule provided by the Queen’s minders when making the call.
But Waller has quickly learned Her Majesty has a passion and understanding for the thoroughbred and the sport.
“Her Majesty loves her horses,’’ Waller said.
“When I was in England a couple of years ago, she told me she had been riding that morning.
“I’ve had a few discussions with her about Chalk Stream now. The one thing she says to me is there is no pressure, just look after the horse and what will be, will be.
“But she knows what is going on with Chalk Stream. When the horse last raced, she knew which horse won the race and the distance of the race.’’
When asked if Her Majesty would get up to watch the Sydney Cup live, Waller replied cryptically: “I think you would be surprised.’’
So, can Chalk Stream win the Sydney Cup for Her Majesty?
“Chalk Stream is still an immature horse and I think he will be even better in six to 12 months but he has ability,’’ Waller said.
“His last start run was very good and he looks a strong stayer. It is very exciting and an absolute privilege to train for Her Majesty, our whole team is very proud of this opportunity, it’s a huge thrill.’’
Chalk Stream is among five starters for the Waller stable as the trainer chases a record sixth Sydney Cup win.
He will also saddle up Crystal Pegasus, Sheraz, No Compromise and Surefire.
Waller is also represented by reigning Horse of the Year and $3 favourite Verry Elleegant in the Group 1 $4m Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m).
Verry Elleegant could be having her final Sydney start as there are tentative plans to take her to France later this year for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
Waller also has leading Group 1 chances in the $1m Queen of the Turf Stakes (1600m) with Fangirl and Hungry Heart, while Hinged is favourite for the $1m ATC Australian Oaks (2400m).
