CHRIS Waller was still in mourning yesterday as the reality of Rangirangdoo's Doomben 10,000 death started to sink in.
The Sydney premiership frontrunner was not fielding media calls yesterday, but sent a text message to Racing Network's Adrian Dunn which outlined the extent of his grief.
"Nothing seems relevant to me at the moment," he wrote. "Premierships, Group 1 races, records have no meaning when you lose one of your best mates.
"I feel for my close friends and supporters of Rangi, along with our dedicated staff and also to Neville and Jenny Morgan and their very supportive family.
"As Harry Telford said about Phar Lap, he wasn't just a horse."
Waller sprinted on to the Doomben track after the 10,000 to be with his stricken galloper, but quickly realised there was no hope.
He was still in shock when he returned to the mounting enclosure.

NATHAN Tinkler's head trainer John Thompson already has an option on the table as he ponders life beyond Patinack Farm.
Thompson said it was likely he would become a public trainer in his own right after the Patinack horses were sold, and given his record under often trying circumstances, he is likely to have plenty of clients knocking on the door.
But in the interim, he has an offer to help prepare a team of horses for the China Horse Club as they gear up for an exhibition meeting in Tianjin in September.
The China Horse Club spent up at April's Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale and are tipped to become a major global player.

THE Doomben wins by Sookie and Peron were a timely reminder of the opportunity over the next fortnight to buy a readymade racehorse, as Tinkler unloads at the Magic Millions National Sale.
Group 3 winner Sookie is scheduled to be sold as Lot 599 on Wednesday, the same day as stablemate Nechita, who is expected to easily top this year's National Sale.
Peron will be sold the following week in the Racehorse Sale, where Reflectance is also among entries.
