BE WARY: Royal Randwick's track continues to improve and should be near-perfect today.

With no rain and warm temperatures in Sydney this week, the course proper is already into a good (3) but should provide a fair surface.

Heatwave conditions in Melbourne with the mercury hitting 40c but expect Caulfield to race well, particularly given the track conditions will get back into the good and with the rail in the true position.

ROYAL RANDWICK

THE BEST BET: Cramming (race 6) is facing the quantum leap from provincials midweek to Sydney Saturday grade but he is a three-year-old of considerable promise.

Resumed with a brilliant effort to come from near last on the turn, swamping his rivals to win easily over 1350m at Wyong then repeated that effort at the same track over 1600m last start when he again finished strongly to win convincingly.

READ KEN CALLANDER'S RANDWICK PREVIEW

He has produced determined finishing efforts to score impressively at both runs this preparation on a track which did not really suit his racing style.

He will be much more at home over the 1600 at Randwick, Cramming is taking on much stronger company today but should prove hard to beat.

THE NEXT BEST: Rule Book (race 2), a former English stayer, continues to improve under Gai Waterhouse and is poised to break through for his first Australian start.

He has had his races well-spaced this preparation, but his last two starts have been including his second behind Koroibete over 1800m on the Kensington track before his narrow loss to Celtic Prince over 2400m at Warwick Farm four weeks ago.

He meets Celtic Prince a kilo better at the weights this time. A winner over 2400m twice in England, Rule Book should lead without pressure today. Ready to win.

JUDGMENT: BOOKIES, TRAINERS HAVE THEIR FINAL SAY

VALUE BET: Pillow Talk (race 8) was stakes placed last spring and is a mare getting better with racing. She has had four runs this campaign and all have been excellent efforts.

She won well second-up at Canterbury, finishing powerfully from well back on the turn, then followed a close fifth at the Kensington track by finishing well again for a three-quarter lengths second to Breakfast In Bed at Randwick last start. Similar grade of race today but there is more depth to this field, However, Pillow Talk gets in well at the weights with Sam Clipperton's 1.5kg claim. Terrific each way value.

THE WHISPER: Boban (race 6) developed into arguably the most exciting galloper in training last spring, winning all five races including twice at Group 1 level in the Epsom Handicap and Emirates Stakes. Super talent with an electrifying finishing sprint.

He has never won at less than 1300m and has managed only one first-up win in four preparations but he is a different racehorse now.

BOBAN IS AUSTRALIA'S BEST-BACKED EXPRESSWAY HORSE

Given a soft trial at Rosehill late last month and is nice and fresh for the Expressway Stakes. Rain Affair's presence will ensure a solid race tempo which is ideal for Boban.

CAULFIELD

THE BEST BET: Moment Of Change (race 8) seems poised to break an exasperating run of outs in the Orr Stakes.

MOMENT DUE FOR CHANGE OF LUCK

He has not won a race since scoring over 1400m at Caulfield in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes 17 months ago but his form since has been very consistent with a string of big-race placings.

Tuned up for the Orr Stakes with a very good first-up second to Richie's Vibe at Moonee Valley late last month.

HEAT STILL THREATENS CAULFIELD MEETING

Moment Of Change was in front until the final few bounds last start and will strip much fitter today.

Moment Of Change could easily lead and dominate from the front today. If he gets away with some easy sectionals, I feel he can outsprint his rivals in the run home. Tough, determined galloper and deserves another major race win.

POLANSKI RULED OUT WITH SKIN INFECTION

NEXT BEST: Better Than Ready (race 7) is a brilliant Queensland sprinter with a very good record of eight wins from 15 starts. A multiple stakes winner in Brisbane and a Group 1 placegetter in the BTC Cup behind Your Song so there is no doubting his ability.

He had a brief campaign during the spring, winning twice at Eagle Farm before being put aside with autumn in mind.

He was given an easy trial at Doomben two weeks ago to prepare for today's race.

Better Than Ready has an excellent first-up record (three wins from four attempts), the small field suits and the likelihood of a very fast tempo will suit his come-from-behind style.

VALUE BET: Pyrrolic (race 3) made a very impressive debut when he romped home by three lengths at Sandown back in May.

This nicely bred colt showed brilliant acceleration and gapped his moderate rivals in the style of a promising horse.

He is resuming after a long spell and taking on some very good gallopers but this colt looks a talent.

With the scratching of Victoria Derby winner Polanski, Pyrrolic and stablemate Accord, both unbeaten, give trainer Mick Kent a strong hand in the Autumn Stakes. Back Pyrrolic each way, he will run a big race.

THE WHISPER: Rubick (race 6) could not have made a bigger impression than his debut win at Randwick late last month when he blitzed his rivals, running the fastest 1000m ever by a juvenile at that track, and seemingly won without being pressured.

He is having his first crack the Melbourne direction today but trainer Gerald Ryan has given him plenty of practice galloping the reverse way at Rosehill.

Significantly, Rubick has drawn barrier two which is a real advantage at Caulfield and particularly in this big field. Brilliant youngster and can maintain his unbeaten record in the Blue Diamond Prelude.
