Andrew Adkins, Hot ‘N’ Hazy euthanised after Rosehill fall, Hugh Bowman inquiry
Aussie jockey Andrew Adkins remains in hospital after his horse was euthanised in a horror fall at Rosehill that’s still being investigated.
Aussie jockey Andrew Adkins will reportedly go under the knife on Sunday after he was rushed to hospital following the horror fall at Rosehill on Saturday.
Adkins was dislodged from Hot’N’Hazy and struck by rival horses in the incident on the home straight of the first race of the meeting.
The two-year-old colt trained by Danny Williams and was treated on the track but tragically had to be put down.
Racing NSW provided an update on Adkins’ condition Sunday, confirming he requires surgery that was delayed on Saturday night.
“Dr. Duckwork reports Andrew Adkins has a fractured tibia and fibula that will be fixed with a nail either tonight or tomorrow,” Racing NSW posted on Twitter.
“He also has a fractured clavicle that will require plate fixation.”
The injury report also showed Adkins had scans on his chest which revealed seven rib fractures.
Adkins posted on Instagram that he is in good spirits, despite the serious injuries.
“All good. There is a smile under the rona mask! Thanks everyone for the messages,” he wrote on Instagram.
“PS: Green whistle is great.”
Pundits and fans took to Twitter to voice their shock at the tragic incident, with many calling for a long ban for Bowman — rider of champion mare Winx — who appeared to strongly shove Hot’N’Hazy before going on to win the race on favourite Smart Image.
An inquiry into the race has been postponed until stewards can speak to Adkins.
Bowman explained his snap decision to push in on Adkins after the race.
“I endeavoured to make a run to the outside of Glyn Schofield (on Mr Colorful) which I had every right to but in doing so I was going to have to move Andrew slightly but I felt that I was able to do so,” Bowman said.
“There was a shift by the horse in front of me (Mr Colorful) and I was committed to the move that I made.
“I felt at the time I made the call to go to the outside of Glyn I could do so without causing any interference to Andrew.”
