Anamoe, who claimed a controversial second last year, has won the centenary Cox Plate at Moonee Valley, finishing ahead of I’m Thunderstruck and El Bodegon, finishing second and third respectively.

It was a thrilling race for the packed crowd, with Zaaki crossing fourth.

It was a soggy day for punters at Moonee Valley with showers continuing to fall in Melbourne following Friday night’s freak electrical storm that saw the Manikato Stakes abandoned.

The Group 1 contest was re-scheduled to feature as Race 11 on Cox Plate Day.

Last year’s Cox Plate was ultimately decided by a contentious call that came from the stewards room after the race.

State Of Rest was confirmed as the winner of the race despite veering across and contacting second-placed finisher Anamoe.

The four-year-old stallion started favourite for this year’s $5m weight-for-age classic after the narrow-miss last year.

Annabel Neasham’s Zaaki was on the second line of betting with some punters convinced the tempo of the race would result in the seven-year-old gelding winning the 2040m race.
