1. DARBY MURNO STAKES
TRAINER Peter Snowden gave the stable's outsider Chiaramonte little chance of winning the Listed Darby Munro Stakes (1200m) let alone anticipate an all-the-way win from the lightly-raced son of Redoute's Choice.
Unwanted in betting, Chiaramonte paid $47.30 on the NSW TAB, with most punters ruling a line through the colt's chances given that he was asked to jump from the outside barrier in the capacity field.
Jockey Josh Parr was able to fire the horse out of the gates and, in a miraculous turn of events, found himself leading on the fence.
Chiaramonte was still in front with 200m and then able to fend off late challenges from Brave Soul and favourite Heart Testa.
"If he drew barrier 1 to 8, you'd say he was a realistic chance by a horse that is very fit and inform but when he drew 16 I thought his chances went out the window but he deserved a crack at a Listed race and I am glad we left him in," Snowden said.
1. Chiaramonte $46.30; $11.15 2. Brave Soul 3. Heart Testa
2. AMBASSADOR NE MANION CUP
GAI Waterhouse-trained import Julienas staked a claim to next month's Group 1 Sydney Cup with a determined staying effort to take out the N. E. Manion Cup (2400m) just seven days after winning the Sky High Stakes.
The son of Cape Cross crossed over from his wide barrier to sit outside the leader Pelicano for the most part until jockey Jim Cassidy went for home at the top of the straight.
Julienas kept to the task right the way to the line staving off late comers Permit and Dance With Her to win by over a length, while pacemaker Pelicano folding up badly to finish at the tail of the field.
"What an amazing performance by the horse," Waterhouse said,"he's backed-up, he's lightly-raced and he will probably start favourite for the Sydney Cup and should be too. He is making the weight for age improvement every time he goes around".
Waterhouse plans to run Julienas in the Chairman's Handicap over 2600m on April 13 at Randwick.
1. Julienas $2.30; $1.20 2. Permit 3. Dance With Her
3. MAGIC NIGHT STAKES
SCANDIVA, a close relation to the champion mare Black Caviar, booked herself a spot in next Saturday’s $3.5 million Golden Slipper with a gritty win in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m).
A daughter of Fastnet Rock, Scandiva is a half-sister to esteemed broodmare Helsinge whose three foals to race include the unbeaten Black Caviar as well as the triple Group 1-winning colt All Too Hard.
Scandiva sped over from her wide alley to sit outside early leader Brilliant Bisc before taking over at the 200m and withstanding a whirlwind finish from Waterhouse runner Shahad who forced a photo to decide the winner.
Scandiva's trainer Anthony Cummings said that the filly was likely to return to Rosehill for next Saturday's juvenile grand final where she will is guaranteed to meet a stronger line-up.
"She is a really nice filly and is very promising," Cummings said, "to work as hard as she did today to get out the gates and still finish off speaks very well of her. I think there is still improvement in our filly and she'll need to, but I think it's there to do."
1. Scandiva $8.10; $3 2. Shahad 3. Major Conquest
4. PAGO PAGO STAKES
TRAINER Peter Snowdon remains uncommitted about whether rapidly improving colt Sidestep will take his place in next Saturday's $3.5m AAMI Golden Slipper despite a dominant win in the Grade 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m).
The son of Darley Stud resident sire Exceed And Excel launched himself like a missile from the 150m to reel in early leader Dothraki who had no answer to Sidestep's stunning burst of acceleration.
Today's effort was a complete reversal of fortunes from last week when Sidestep dumped the rider at the start of the Todman Slipper and took no part.
Snowden, who won the 2011 Golden Slipper with Sepoy, has two confirmed runners in the big one but isn't guaranteeing Sidestep.
"It sounds the obvious choice to go the Slipper next week but we have to think about the longevity of the horse as well and see how he pulls up. He is still immature, he's still new and he still does things wrong which is a bit of a concern. He deadest has good ability but whether it is going to come next week or later on, we’ll have to a good talk about."
1. Sidestep $2; $1.10 2. Dothraki 3. Fuerza
5. EPONA STAKES
LAST year's AJC Oaks runner-up Aliyana Tilde made a long overdue return to the winner's circle with a thrilling come from behind win in the Epona Stakes (1900m).
The Kerry Parker trained mare hadn't been able to win since taking out a lowly Class 2 at Gosford in March but managed to lodge consecutive placings in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes before her narrow second to Streama in the Oaks.
"When she came back last time she just got knocked around by the Oaks and a few hard runs she'd had so we just tipped her back out and were a little patient so it's great to get the reward today," Parker said.
Wining rider Corey Brown timed his run to perfection aboard the daughter of Sniztel but needed all of his vigour to deny Melbourne mare Epingle the prize with Dolly Dolly close up in third.
"She hit the line really well last start in the short straight and coming into today with the extra distance and the long straight would suit her," Parker comment, "it took her all of it to pick them up but she's done well."
1. Aliyana Tilde $8.70; $3 2. Epingle 3. Dolly Dolly
6. ROSEHILL GUINEAS
AS expected It's A Dundeel toyed with his inferior opposition to remain on course to clinch the Sydney triple crown for three-year-olds.
Jockey James McDonald elected to go back with the star colt, sitting in second last place six or seven lengths off the pace before asking the youngster for an effort at the turn.
On straightening for the run home, It's A Dundeel raced away from his opposition to win by four lengths being eased down with Sacred Falls and Tatra filling the minor placings.
1. It's A Dundeel $1.40; $1.04 2. Sacred Falls 3. Tatra
7. THE GALAXY
JASON Warren-trained sprinter Bel Sprinter has returned to form with a runaway victory after missing the start by two lengths.
After overcoming a respiratory ailment following surgery over summer, Bel Sprinter was smashed late in the betting ring ($10.80) before winning with authority.
Early leader and race favourite Snitzerland could not go with the winner and despite a brave effort could only manage second place, with Decision Time running on for third.
1. Bel Sprinter $10.80; $3.20 2. Snitzerland 3. Decision Time
8. AJAX STAKES
BOLD front runner Havana Rey did his bit to ensure a Super Saturday for father and son duo Murray and Bjorn Baker when he led throughout to win a hotly contested Ajax Stakes (1500m).
Baker, 34, has been a revelation in Sydney's training ranks since arriving at Warwick Farm 18-months ago after serving as an assistant to his father back in New Zealand.
The champagne was still flowing after It's A Dundeel gave Murray Baker the first two legs of the triple crown with his Rosehill Guineas triumph as Havana Rey ran his rivals into the ground to win the Ajax Stakes ahead of a fast finishing Riva De Lago and Doncaster bound Monton in third.
"He only galloped very ordinarily on Tuesday and we were debating whether we'd come here today but racing is a funny game," Bjorn Baker said.
"He's been a very special horse to me because he was my city winner, my first Saturday winner and I guess my first Group winner in Sydney."
The big disappointment of the Ajax was the heavily backed Carlton House, owned by Her Majesty The Queen and trained by Gai Waterhouse.
The imports stepped slowly and settled midfield but was never a realistic chance at any stage of the race beating only a handful of other to the line.
1. Havana Rey $10.80; $3.20 2. Riva De Lago 3. Morton
9. BIRTHDAY CARD STAKES
GREY mare Arinosa was being hailed as the most improved horse in the country after she powered over her rivals to win the Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes (1200m) to wind up Guineas Day at Rosehill.
The Chris Waller-trained mare has won four of her past six starts, but in that time has made the quantum leap from restricted mares grade to dual stakeswinner with the promise of more to come.
"They get in that zone, they think they are winners and they improve," Waller said.
"Without taking away from Sydney, I think that race in Queensland at the end of the carnival would be ideal for her, it's a Group 1 1400m race but if we can win another in Sydney on the way then that would be all right, too."
Former Victorian mare Soft Sand let her supporters down, never figuring after missing the start by two lengths and chasing throughout.
1. Arinosa $10.80; $3.20 2. Shamal Wind 3. Miss Stellabelle
