Brilliant ride by Nash Rawiller proved vital in helping Too Much Caviar end 19-month drought at Rosehill

Too Much Caviar put the writing on the wall with a good first-up run but a superb ride by Nash Rawiller helped the gelding go one better at Rosehill.

Star jockey Nash Rawiller produced the perfect stalking ride to help Too Much Caviar return to the winners’ list at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

Rawiller had the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained galloper poised to strike behind the leader No Drama in the Cabra-Vale Diggers Benchmark 78 Handicap (1500m).

He launched off the leader’s back at the top of the straight before Too Much Caviar showed grit and determination in the run to the line to score as No Drama faded late to finish fourth.

“Tim (Clark on No Drama) put a bit of pressure on there and upped the tempo maybe a bit earlier than Nash wanted to make his run,” Bott said.

“He dropped in behind and got a bit of cover there.

“I think that’s where they are saying the wind is at its strongest, hitting them on the turn.

“He got a bit of cover there and it might have been the difference in the end.”

Too Much Caviar ($6) toughed it out to beat the Chris Waller-trained Cadetship ($17) by half a length while Waller’s Unusual Legacy ($6.50) was a further one-and-a-half lengths back in third.

Too Much Caviar hadn’t won since New Year’s Eve in 2022 and that victory came in a 2000m affair at Royal Randwick.

An excellent first-up second behind Flying Destiny at Canterbury earlier in the month had Bott confident he was ready to break his winning drought.

“He put the writing on the wall there first-up, I thought that was an excellent return there from him,” Bott said.

“I would say it’s the sharpest we have seen him back in all his campaigns.

“He paraded really well first-up so it was no surprise he ran well.

“It was a bit of a surprise in the sharpness in his legs because he is getting older now and getting a bit faster which is good to see.”

Bott will give consideration to running Too Much Caviar in a Big Dance qualifier in the coming months but had no firm plans in mind for the gelding.

“He will keep improving as he gets over more ground,” he said.

“Today he was naturally be able to sit that little bit more forward, stepping up in trip.

“Maybe we will keep him around the mile but we do have options to stretch him out over a bit further.”
