A WWE star has been rushed to hospital after his risky stunt went horribly wrong on live TV.

The “Irish Ace” was competing in the World Tag Championship alongside Dominik Mysterio in front of a packed crowd inside the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.

The live TV footage showed the 34-year-old soared into the air, but over shot the mark as he attempted to execute the move on rival War Raiders wrestler Ivar.

McDonagh was seen whiplashing into the announces desk as he landed on Ivar with his head snapping back after direct contact between the top of the signage fence and his neck.

He immediately slumped forward and was clearly in serious pain.

Ivar was seen briefly breaking character to check on his fellow performer, The Sun reports.

Commentator Michael Cole said McDonagh should be checked on to make sure he was not seriously injured.

“Somebody’s got to McDonagh after that,” Cole said as they showed a replay of the incident.

“McDonagh’s lucky he doesn’t have a damn broken neck.”

However, incredibly, McDonagh managed to carry on and see out the match.

The scariest sight came after the War Raiders retained their Tag Team Championship title when fans spotted McDonagh collapsed on the ground backstage.

WWE officials announced after the event on Tuesday (AEDT) that McDonagh had been taken to hospital.

It was then confirmed that he had broken several ribs and even punctured a lung in the ordeal.

The wrestler himself has addressed the incident on social media.

“First off, thanks to everyone for the messages and the concern. I’m good,,” he wrote on X.

“I’ve got a couple of broken ribs and a punctured lung, so I’m going to be out for a couple months.

“All things considered, it could have been a lot worse, so I’m grateful for that. See ya in a bit.”

The injuries mean he will miss the Royal Rumble on February 1.

Several of McDonagh’s WWE colleagues have shared public support for McDonagh.

Chad Gable wrote: “JD McDonagh is remarkable.”

Hurrican Helms wrote: “JD McDonagh is a f***en stud.”

Ivar, also shared some images from the match and wrote “respect”, along with a prayer emoji.

Messages of support flooded in from WWE fans on social media for the star - with many relieved the damage was not as bad as first feared.
