While our male sporting teams fail, our women are getting it done

NICK Kyrgios is sledging like a big brat and our men’s cricket team are busy fighting about why they suck. There’s only one group who’s really getting it done, says Em Rusciano.

HEY you sexy legends! I have some incredible news. Australia totally won a world championship over the weekend.

Yeah we did!

The Australian Diamonds netball team took out their third big shiny trophy in a row, beating the New Zealand Silver Ferns, in a red hot final.

What’s that? Why yes, the Australia Women’s basketball team did win two games to nil against the NZ in the Olympic qualifiers for the women’s basketball last night, thank you for asking!

Goooooo Opals!

Oh and guess what? I mean you won’t believe this BUT we’re also about to take out the Ashes! The Australian women’s cricket team ANNIHILATED England in Canterbury test by 161 runs and now have an 8-2 lead in the series.

The sporting ladies of this country are KICKING A*** at the moment and I for one don’t feel as though we are making enough noise about it.

Let’s be real, if you’re reading this right now and thinking ‘yes Em but women’s sport is just not as interesting as Men’s’ then I’m very sorry, but you’re wrong. Because the netty grand final I witnessed over the weekend was pee-your-pants thrilling.

Let’s be honest, there is a lot of crap going on at the moment with our male athletes. I think my favourite part of last week was Nick Kyrgios’ efforts on the tennis court, delivering a sledge worthy of a Year 9 footy grand final to his opponent Stan Wawrinka. On the same day, Bernard Tomic was due to face court over some interesting behavioural choices and yet not one of the Australia Diamond netball team took a whiz in a pot plant, got into a drunken punch-on or crashed a high-powered car.

Up top ladies!

While the Australian men’s cricket team were in complete disarray with their captain resigning, calls for the WAGS to be left at home and Warnie giving a hugely successful ex-Australian coach an impressive verbal spray; the Southern Stars were just quietly getting s*** done.

Is that what it takes to get your love Australia?! Do our female athletes need to start acting out to get some attention? Even when they are winning we barely talk about them.

Should the Diamond’s have taken to the court sans undies? Maybe then, they would have got some front page action.

Did you know that only 7 per cent of sports programming in this country covers women’s sport? Do you get how little that is?! Horse racing gets more coverage, actual horses you guys.

Can you think of the last sporting scandal that involved a female athlete? No, me either. Most of the female athletes in this country have to work day jobs as well as train fulltime so I guess they just don’t have the space in their calendars to behave badly huh?

So I am doing my small part, I am using my national platform to say WELL BLOODY DONE to the Diamonds, the Southern Stars, The Matildas and the Opals. I will FORCE this publication to run photos of all the teams in my column! I mean it, there will be wall to wall epic female athlete coverage. The image nerds have been sent to the archives to put me together a gallery of WARRIOR WOMEN! I am the new self appointed, unwanted, PR agent for ladies sport in this country! Because I reckon showing women leading, coaching, and performing at the highest levels can only be a good thing for the young men and women of Australia.

Look obviously not all Australian male sports people are ratbags. In the spirit of fairness congratulations to Aussie golfer Jason Day who won the US PGA championships yesterday. Apparently he is a really decent bloke too, so that’s nice. They might mention it on the news I suppose … HA. They’ll probably do the bloody news live from the 19th hole. That’s golf talk for club house you guys, I know the business.

YAY SPORT! (for everyone)
