Torah Bright’s nude breastfeeding photo controversy just won’t die

Olympic legend Torah Bright has been forced to defend herself yet again, questioning how anyone could take her breastfeeding photo seriously.

Olympic snowboarding star Torah Bright has spoken out again, calling on mothers to support one another after she received backlash for sharing a nude breastfeeding photo on the weekend.

The 34-year-old stunned her Instagram followers with a wild post showing her breastfeeding 10-month-old son Flow while upside down.

Bright’s incredible acrobatics were well received by many — but not everyone was pleased as the Aussie legend came under fire from online trolls.

Having addressed some of the backlash in an Instagram post earlier this week, the hate has kept coming Bright’s way and she felt compelled to address the photo yet again in a video posted to social media on Wednesday.

Despite feeling “a bit silly” for addressing the matter, Bright said she spoke out after there were “a lot of negative comments” from other mothers.

“Mothers, we need to encourage each other, we need to lift each other up, we need pay each other compliments, we need support each other,” Bright said.

“We need to be each other’s biggest cheerleaders because motherhood is so beautiful, but reality is, we are the only ones who know just how hard those moments are and we need to have each other’s back — not compare each other and judge each other, because we all do things so differently and that’s why it’s so beautiful.”

Bright ended the clip laughing, and asked: “But did anyone really think that’s how I breastfed?”

Bright welcomed her first child in July 2020 with husband Angus Thomson, who’s also a snowboarder, and the breastfeeding photo was meant to celebrate her first Mother’s Day.

Following the negative response, Bright said the comments made her “sad”, but noted she has nothing but respect for all mothers.

When the backlash escalated, Bright, a two-time gold medallist at the X Games, issued the video response.

“The photo was just a little bit of pure fun! Celebrating the bond between mother and child,” she explained in her caption.

“I can understand how it’s not everyone’s taste, that’s fine. But from some of the negative feedback, what has struck me most is how we all, especially mothers need to support and up lift. Not judge a moment in time.

“Let’s find the village of motherhood to grow and support each other.

“Remember … our children learn from our example.”

When Flow was born, Bright opened up about the incredible feeling of becoming a mother.

“I am so overwhelmed with love and gratitude and in awe of the female body,” Bright posted at the time.

“The village of incredible humans around me, and afar helped me ride each wave to bring a baby to Angus and I.

“I will be forever grateful and connected to each person for the guidance, support and love in helping me achieve my birth wishes and preparing me for the journey of a lifetime.”

Bright famously won a gold medal at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics in the halfpipe event before clinching a silver at Sochi four years later. She is Australia’s most successful athlete in Winter Olympic history.

In 2014, she became the first athlete — male or female — to qualify for all three snowboarding disciplines at the Olympics.
