This man is travelling across the world for the AFL Grand Final
OVER 48 hours in transit, $2300 in fares and a ditched holiday in Venice. This dad has completely redefined the word “dedication”.
WHEN you think of a crazy sports fan, what crosses your mind?
There’s always a few overeager supporters in the crowd donning full-body paint in their team’s colours with a equally-frivolous sombrero and Australian flag cape.
Everyone’s been with a group of mates who want to splurge on gold-tier seats, or make a crazy road trip to see your team play in a final.
It doesn’t matter what you’ve seen, because Tony Gwinnett has blown it out of the park.
Self-confessed as a terrible planner of holidays, Mr Gwinnett has left his wife and kids in Venice, Italy to make Saturday afternoon’s AFL grand final in Melbourne to see his beloved Richmond Tigers attempt to take their first flag since 1980.
He’s spent $2300 on return flights and will meet them in Geneva the following week.
To an onlooker, Tony’s 48-hour round journey to catch 80 minutes of footy seems nothing short of insane. But such is the passion of a diehard Tigers fan with a rabid obsession to end a 37-year premiership drought.
I left wife and kids in Venice and we’ll meet up again in Geneva. I get back there about 2pm on Monday,” he told news.com.au.
Mr Gwinnett denied his mammoth round-trip made him the craziest AFL fan in history.
“All Tigers fans are crazy,” he said. “The only crazy thing was agreeing at the end of last year to a holiday in Europe in September.
“When the Tigers made the top four my wife told me to book a flight back, and cancel if they fell out of the finals.”
The 43-year-old says the devastating thought of a Crows win hasn’t even touched his brain.
“I’m not thinking about a loss,” he said. “I believe in them and I think they can beat Adelaide. They have been playing some great footy for a few weeks, with some big margins ... and Dusty (Dustin Martin) just gets better and better each week.”
Mr Gwinnett, who works as a software engineer, said his wife had a sound piece of advice for his weekend trip to the G.
“If they win, it will be a big night,” he said. “One piece of advice from the wife was don’t be too drunk that you cant get on the plane to come back.
“I planned the return flight late Sunday just in case they win.”
